Description

West Virginia University Institute of Technology (WVU Tech), a part of the WVU System of campuses located in Beckley, WV, is seeking applications for the position of HVAC & Electrician Lead.

About the Opportunity

The HVAC & Electrician Lead position consists of repair, maintenance and installation of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration controls and equipment. Provides electrical expertise for installation on new construction and renovations along with general maintenance of existing facilities. Shall provide guidance to trade specialist and other assigned personnel.

What you'll do:

Lead



  • Functions as a team leader, providing guidance to trade specialists and others support personnel as required. Follows procedures and makes work assignments to those individuals assigned to the crew to ensure work is completed in a timely fashion, ensuring proper quality and quantity. Inspects completed work assignments and helps to ensure quality control. Endures that proper safety procedures, equipment and personal protective equipment are used while performing job duties.
  • Receives work orders. Interfaces with supervisor and requesting party to finalize project needs and scope. Assist supervisor with multi-craft projects related to overall work assignments. Communicates work schedules and goals to employees and customer, creating efficiency and a timely completion of assignments
  • Provides continual inspection of assigned area to ensure maintenance is completed on schedule, recommends to the supervisor major repair need, assists supervisor in updating deferred maintenance list
  • Determines and recommends to the supervisor the needs of the project in regard to crew size, types of crafts, material availability, equipment, paperwork safety checks to maintain proper work and material flow in order to maintain schedule.
  • Provides daily reports on actual progress versus project progress to supervisor. Maintains the original scope of project to ensure project cost control. Informs supervisor of needed discipline and performance problems. Endures that work group processes all work requests, materials requisitions, weekly reports, and invoices necessary to complete assignments according to Facilities operation.


HVAC



  • Utilize test equipment for proper diagnosis of failed mechanical systems. The test equipment will include instruments such as refrigerant gauges, velometer, electric meter, amprobe, acid test, and vacuum meter. The use of this equipment will require strong mathematical skills and analytical ability. Will also use various hand tools and power tools. Will have ability to solder and brazo refrigerant piping and components utilizing the proper torch and material.
  • Must have complete knowledge of refrigerant and reclaiming equipment. Must also maintain knowledge of regulations that apply to such equipment. The use of this equipment governed by specific EPA regulations. Must also complete required documentation associated with refrigerant use.
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair air handling units, lab equipment, chilled water distribution, heating water distribution, mixing boxes, duct systems and all associated controls and safety devices.
  • Repair, rebuild, overhaul and maintain refrigeration and chiller systems such as screw chillers, centrifugal chillers, reciprocating chillers and steam absorption machines.
  • Fabricate, maintain, repair, and install components associated with compressor replacement and installation for cooling units up to several hundred tons capacity. The tolerances of this equipment can be extremely tight and must be handled properly. This also includes support components such as block dryers, sight glasses, expansion valves, hot gas bypass valves, headmaster controls, fan cycling switches, condensing fans, temperature control boards, and service valves.
  • Must have the ability and knowledge to diagnose and repair pneumatic systems and controls.
  • Troubleshoot, maintain and repair cooling towers, condensers, and associated controls to maintain proper temperature, capacity and flow. Will also monitor water treatment systems and ensure proper adjustments are made.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain ultra-low freezers, ice machines, air dryer systems, centrifuge, environmental chambers, window air conditioners, evaporative coolers, water coolers, refrigerators and any other devices utilized for temperature control or ventilation. These systems support many years of experimentation and thus are very important to the operation of WVU Tech.
  • Maintain and install building control systems using pneumatic and electrical controls. Interpret blueprints and specifications and develops as-build sketches of completed projects. Operate and maintain computer systems and coordinate projects and service with control vendor(s).
  • Ensure that all local, state, and federal building codes are maintained.
  • Work in areas designated as confined spaces.
  • Maintain an organized work area to include cleanliness, safety, and security of materials.
  • Maintain and install building control systems using pneumatic and electrical controls. Interpret blueprints and specifications and develops as-build sketches of completed projects. Operate and maintain computer systems and coordinate projects and service with control vendor(s).
  • Ensure that all local, state, and federal building codes are maintained.
  • Work in areas designated as confined spaces.
  • Maintain an organized work area to include cleanliness, safety, and security of materials.


Electrical



  • Lead also has the responsibility to see that all Personal Protective Equipment (medium voltage gloves, sleeves, di-electric hard hat, safety glasses, and face shield or hood and flash suit); other safety equipment may be used (hot sticks, rubber blanket, and arc flash blankets). All Lock-Out/Tag-Out devices must be in place and used to ensure the safety of all employees who are performing these PM tasks.
  • Install, repair, and inspect electrical distribution equipment and wiring both inside and outside buildings to verify capacities. Install and maintain circuit breakers, sub-station switchgear, and transformers.
  • Install, maintain, repair, and inspect wires and auxiliary equipment, such as fuses, insulators, and switches to ascertain capacities and working conditions, utilizing thorough knowledge of types, sizes, and styles of equipment.
  • Install and maintain fire alarms, emergency lighting, emergency generator power transfer switches, and those items associated with life safety, as they pertain to the electrical field.
  • Install and maintain all control systems for motors, lights, heat, and air controls, participating with various crafts as required to properly troubleshoot and repair control systems.
  • Design routing plans, install and maintain new electrical conduit, tubing, wiremold, raceway, and associated accessories to accommodate electrical and telecommunications wiring. This duty requires pipe fitting ability.
  • Install and maintain existing and new lighting systems for both interior and exterior to buildings, including streetlights and parking lot lighting.
  • Assist with building maintenance requests; ability to diagnose and repair various equipment as needed. This may include, but is not limited to, electrical repairs, such as replacing switches, lamps, ballasts, outlets, breaker resets. Responsible for troubleshooting circuits up to 277 VAC, single phase.
  • Participate in the installation of simple electronic control systems, clock systems, etc.
  • Individual maintains, inspects, and assures that testing of specialized equipment is completed. This includes testing equipment (medium voltage tester, amp meter, proximity tester, and megger); also, the infrared camera technology must be used while performing PM work orders to capture photos of equipment as part of the preventive maintenance work.


General Maintenance



  • Function as a team leader, providing guidance to trade specialists and others support personnel as required. Follow procedures and make work assignments to those individuals assigned to the crew to ensure work is completed in a timely fashion, ensuring proper quality and quantity. Inspect completed work assignments and helps to ensure quality control. Endure that proper safety procedures, equipment and personal protective equipment are used while performing job duties.
  • Individual will have responsibility to read and review prints on new and existing building projects for repair or construction associated with specific job duties and expertise. Individual will also develop as built sketches of completed projects.
  • Will perform general painting duties, such as: painting walls, ceilings, trim, and furniture using enamel/latex paints with brushes, rollers, and low-pressure sprayers; patches and prepares surfaces for painting to include finishing drywall or similar tasks requiring basic painting skills.
  • Assist on installation on all types of interior and exterior doors (wood or metal) including frames, jambs, door stops, interior and exterior trim and associated hardware such as hinges, locks, closures, panic hardware, etc.
  • Assist on installation on interior and exterior walls, partitions, paneling, siding, wallpaper, plaster wall coverings, insulation, wood trim (i.e., moldings, casings, baseboards), metal studding; installs and finishes drywall.
  • Individual will maintain knowledge of state, federal and local codes and requirements pertaining to maintenance and construction. Individual will attend project meetings and interact with contractors, vendors and engineers as needed.
  • Assist with plumbing related repairs and maintenance. This includes, but is not limited to, faucets, plugged drains, replacement of worn traps, repair of leaks and drips in various sinks, tubs, and plumbing systems.
  • Lead must be willing to participate in University offered training classes that pertain to their job classification in order to keep up with changes in technology and codes to ensure that all University building codes are maintained.
  • Will be required to perform Roads and Grounds work; this will include, but is not limited to, shoveling walkways, operating snow removal machinery (blower, broom), maintaining barrier free entries and exits; applying de-icing products.
  • Operate, service and maintain all grounds equipment, such as trucks, tractors, large seeders, riding mowers, snow removal, skid loaders, tilt bed trucks and steep slope mowing equipment.
  • Operate trash compactor truck and drives vans on special occasions (graduation/homecoming).
  • Operate various hand and power tools and equipment in performance of duties such as brooms, mops, rakes, shovels, dollies, hand trucks, vacuums, shampooers, power buffing machines, lawn mowers, weed eaters, etc.


Other



  • Assist supervisor in disciplinary action.
  • Must have ability to utilize a computer, respond to emails and complete electronic work orders.
  • This position will require a flexible work schedule and the ability to respond to emergency situations which may require additional hours, and/or call-in.
  • Perform other duties associated with a Campus Service Worker.
  • Create a work order if you detect an issue that needs repaired.
  • Order supplies or identify if equipment is not working.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or as directed.

Qualifications

  • Must have high school diploma or GED
  • Must have one of the following:

    • 2 years of experience in Electrical & HVAC repairs and maintenance.
    • Completion of an associate's degree as an Electrical or HVAC technician
    • Completion of a 2-year accredited vocational Electrical or HVAC trades program


  • One (1) year experience leading and/or training others
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

Requirements

  • WV state electrical license (Journeyman), preferred
  • Universal Refrigeration License - EPA requires this license for working on refrigerant-containing equipment (preferred, but must be obtained within first year of employment)
  • Valid Driver's License
