Job Summary
Assistant Nurse Managers are registered nurses who are responsible for the operation of the nursing unit over a specific time period. The Assistant Nurse Manager must have a strong foundation of clinical knowledge and skills on which to base judgments and make decisions, organizing abilities to direct nursing tasks and operations, and interpersonal skills to facilitate communication and the work of others. The Assistant Nurse Manager accepts the responsibility for, and is accountable for, his/her own nursing practice. The Assistant Nurse Manager also seeks out and pursues opportunities for learning and assumes responsibility for their own self-development. Registered nurses must be knowledgeable and skillful in performing the Assistant Nurse Manager role. A registered nurse who assumes the role of Assistant Nurse Manager also assumes the responsibility inherent to the role. Three fundamental responsibilities for Assistant Nurse Manager include planning, coordinating, and evaluating unit nursing activities.
In addition, the Assistant Nurse Manager identifies and implements nursing interventions and evaluates results for a wide variety of patient populations, directs and acts as resource to other members of the nursing team as assigned and promotes compliance and support for policies. The primary responsibilities for this position consist of providing total, comprehensive, continuous and patient centered care which includes: assessing, documenting, planning, implementing, teaching, developing, and evaluating a comprehensive nursing plan of care; delivering direct patient care; ensuring patient satisfaction; training and delegating duties; and adhering to University policies and procedures as well as federal, state and local regulations.
Autonomous nursing care is the ability of a nurse to assess and provide nursing actions as appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. The nurse is expected to practice autonomously consistent with American Nurses' Association Standards of Practice and Professional Performance. - Valid California Registered Nurse License without restriction
- American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UC Davis Health CPR
- CNOR Certification within six (6) months of hire
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
- Two (2) years of recent RN OR work experience in a Level I or Level II Trauma Center OR
- Four (4) years or recent RN OR work experience in a multi-specialty outpatient surgery center.
- Recent work experience managing a complex perioperative environment or similar Operating Room setting
- Clinical Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of nursing experience, with at least two years in a supervisory or managerial role in an in-patient setting.
- Leadership and Management:Strong track record in team collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive patient care and seamless communication across departments.
- Operational Management: Experience in managing the daily operations of a nursing unit, including staff scheduling, resource allocation, and maintaining compliance with healthcare standards and protocols. Proven track record in implementing quality improvement initiatives, leading to measurable outcomes.
- Administrative Skills: Experience in resource management and budgeting. Proficiency in developing and updating unit policies and procedures to align with best practices and regulatory requirements.

Department Overview Perioperative Services at UC Davis Health encompasses multiple Operating Rooms, Preoperative and Post-Anesthesia Units, and Sterile Processing Departments, across the UC Davis Health Campus. Service Line Managers in the Operating Room are registered nurses, responsible for the administrative coordination and clinical management of their assigned area of oversight.
The Service Line Manager will use their strong foundation of clinical knowledge and operational skills on which to base judgments and make decisions within their area of oversight. Using organization skills, they will manage multiple high priority tasks simultaneously, while directing nursing tasks and daily operations within their specific service lines. They will act as a conduit between the perioperative team, anesthesia providers, surgeons, et al for the purpose of providing excellent surgical care to patients and families.
As a member of the perioperative leadership team, the Service Line Manager will collaborate with other members of Perioperative Services to set standards of care, participate in policy development, develop quality and safety processes, and ensure complete implementation of the same.
In addition, the Service Line Manager is responsible for building a positive work culture that reflects the mission and vision of the organization, ensures staff competency, completes staff performance review improvement, and acts as resource to other members of the surgical team.
