Description

Clark Nexsen is seeking a creative, ambitious Senior Architect I with extensive experience on Federal projects, that shares our commitment to design excellence, sustainability, and innovation. You will join a team of architects and designers, working in a multi-discipline, collaborative, and engaging team-based environment that draws on multiple perspectives in the pursuit of innovative solutions. As part of this team, you will have the opportunity to lead architectural projects in a variety of typologies and scales for the Department of Defense (DoD) and other government agencies. The ideal candidate for this position will be energetic and passionate about design, committed to quality, engaged in team, office, and firm-wide initiatives, able to work independently and in a team environment, an enthusiastic mentor for other design staff, and able to plan, prioritize and delegate work.

The Virginia Beach, VA office is the ideal location for the candidate hired for this position. Consideration will be given for other office locations should a candidate apply who displays the experience required to work independent of the main federal architecture team.

General responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:



  • Lead project teams during project design phases including programming, concept development, schematic design, design development, and construction documentation
  • Lead all aspects of architectural design including the development of design sketches, renderings, models, graphics, presentation materials, analysis, construction drawings and schedules
  • Participate in the bidding and construction administration of projects including jobsite visits, review of submittals, and responding to contractor questions
  • Communicate and engage with a wide variety of stakeholders including clients, owners, users, team members, consultants, contractors, and regulatory agencies to achieve overall project objectives
  • Concurrently lead multiple projects at varying stages of design and construction
  • Contribute to office activities, initiatives, and participation in continuouslearning
  • Mentor junior design staff in their professional development

Education, Technology, and Experience



  • Professional degree from a NAAB accredited Architecture program
  • 10+ years of professional experience
  • Fully licensed Architect in at least one US state
  • Be familiar with United Facilities Criteria (UFC) as they relate to design of DoD and government facilities
  • Experience in the design of Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIFs) and spaces with Radio Frequency (RF) shielding is preferred
  • Experience with both Design/Bid/Build and Design/Build project delivery methods
  • Have the ability to gain and maintain a Secret security clearance
  • US Citizenship is required
  • Additional accreditations supporting the firm's commitment to design and continued personal growth (LEED AP, WELL, etc.) will be given special consideration
  • Ability and experience in producing quality construction documents, and a thorough understanding of building detailing, construction principles and practices
  • Proficient understanding or use of Revit in producing complex models and construction documents. Additional exposure to 3D modeling, visualization, and graphics software; Rhino, Grasshopper, Lumion, Enscape, Twinmotion, and Adobe Suite are preferred
  • Excellent graphic, drawing, and presentation capabilities
  • Exposure to environmental analysis applications such as Climate Studio, Sefaira, Insight360, and Lady Bug/Honeybee is a plus
  • Understanding of sustainable design principles and interest in achieving accreditation in LEED AP, WELL AP, and/or Green Globes

Physical Requirements

Work is sedentary and often performed in an office setting. Work area is lighted, heated, and ventilated. This position may require extended periods of standing, sitting, as well as some repetitive movements, bending and lifting of minimal weight. Workplace Flexibility

We have selected two as common days in the office to nurture collaboration and innovation and to support learning and growth through engagement with colleagues. We are asking everyone to be present on Mondays and Thursdays, with a required third day that will provide additional flexibility and be set established between you and your supervisor (with consideration given to your project team members and clients). Our hope is that this schedule will offer the work-life balance that is desired by all, while providing consistent opportunities for face-to-face collaboration and mentorship.
