About the Role

Key Responsibilities

• Produce high-quality communications materials, including social media posts, press materials, and long-form stories, that effectively promote scientific research, scientific publications, and organizational activities.
• Source or create compelling multimedia assets to accompany written content, enhancing engagement and reach.
• Review and edit written materials rigorously to ensure accuracy, clarity, and strict adherence to organizational style guidelines.
• Proactively identify newsworthy or compelling scientific content ripe for promotion across various platforms.
• Assist with the strategic management of social media accounts, including maintaining editorial calendars, creating, editing, and posting content, fostering audience interaction, and monitoring performance metrics.
• Support efforts to track and report on social media performance, providing insights for continuous improvement.
• Monitor the evolving social media landscape to stay abreast of emerging trends, opportunities, potential risks, and industry changes, ensuring the organization remains at the cutting edge of digital communication.

Qualifications

Must-Have Qualifications

• Minimum of three years of related experience as a science writer for a news outlet, research organization, or scientific publisher.
• Impeccable writing, editing, and interviewing skills, with a proven ability to craft compelling narratives.
• Demonstrated ability to distill complex scientific concepts into clear, concise, and engaging prose for diverse audiences.
• Extensive experience creating multimedia content and effectively utilizing social media platforms to communicate about science.
• Thorough knowledge of journalistic standards and ethics.
• Exceptional understanding of news values and the scientific process.
• Strategic thinker with strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and relationship-building capabilities, fostering collaborative environments.
• Proficient in relevant software, including Sprout Social, Google Business Suite, and Asana.
• Fluent in AP style.

Nice-to-Have Qualifications

• Background in physics is a plus.
