Position description

The Department of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for a teaching-track position at the level of Assistant Teaching Professor, 100% time, open fields. Assistant Teaching Professors are full members of the academic senate and are eligible for Security of Employment, equivalent to tenure.

The responsibilities of Assistant Teaching Professors emphasize teaching large enrollment courses, especially at the undergraduate level, and contributing to the teaching mission of the department. The Assistant Teaching Professor would lead the pedagogical training of the Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs) and participate in the department's Undergraduate Committee, ensuring that the GSIs and Faculty are aligned in delivering the best instruction to undergraduates. Assistant Teaching Professors are also expected to maintain professional and/or scholarly achievement and activity, and to contribute to university and public service as senate faculty.

About the Department: The Department of Economics is among the largest teaching and research departments at UC Berkeley and is consistently ranked among the top five in its field worldwide. The department employs 17 departmental staff, approximately 40 ladder-rank faculty, and maintains a total academic membership of approximately 70 scholars, including joint appointments, lecturers, visiting faculty and active emeritus.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international) degree-granting program at the time of application.

Preferred qualifications

Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) in Economics or a related field completed by date of appointment preferred.

Candidates are preferred to have demonstrated potential and/or a proven record of teaching excellence at the undergraduate level, especially in large enrollment courses, and scholarly experience in economics. It is preferred if candidates have a record and/or potential for pedagogical innovation and effective leadership, including demonstrated ability to manage large enrollment courses staffed with teams of graduate student instructors. Candidates are preferred to have experience or demonstrated commitment to professional service.

The preferred candidates for a position will have demonstrated that they are promising or established educators in economics and who are interested in a teaching-focused career. Applicants should be excited about the opportunity to teach large (400+ student) undergraduate courses and would develop and share best practices for teaching a diverse student body, particularly relevant with the rapidly changing environment for undergraduate education in the era of AI.

  • Teaching Dossier - A dossier of teaching materials that can include a selection of course syllabi; course website link(s); video(s) of your teaching (either as an attachment or linked online); created course materials such as homework assignments, projects, lecture slides, handouts and/or exams; teaching evaluations (with student comments) received either as a teaching assistant and/or as an instructor of record; peer evaluations of teaching; or other materials of your choosing that showcase your teaching excellence. There is no page limit, though make sure to highlight key achievements in the Statement of Teaching.


  • Statement of Professional and/or Scholarly Achievement and Activity - A statement describing your professional and/or scholarly achievements and activities, or promise of productive contributions to professional and/or scholarly activity, that would support excellent teaching, including a description of plans for future scholarship at UC Berkeley. Professional and/or scholarly activities may be related to the underlying discipline itself or to the pedagogy. Such activities should provide examples of achievement, leadership, and/or influence. Certain administrative work (e.g., of learning centers and teaching programs) and community outreach work are also relevant, as would be presentations of seminars or lectures at other institutions or professional societies, or participation in scholarly activities (e.g., summer seminars) designed to enhance scholarly expertise in relevant fields. Other records of participation in intensive programs of study - in order to be a more effective teacher and scholar, with the goal of enhancing one's teaching and scholarly responsibilities - are also relevant evidence of professional and/or scholarly activity.


  • Statement of University and Public Service - Please discuss specific prior and proposed academic, professional and/or public service activities. This can include, for example, participating in professional or scientific associations, serving on committees that advance department, campus or discipline goals, and conducting outreach activities that can remove barriers and increase participation of academics in your field.

Reference letters must be requested by the deadline to have a complete application in APRecruit, but the search committee expects to receive the letters by the deadline, or asap afterwards.

Applicants must provide three letters of recommendation that speak to their record and/or potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring, as well as scholarly achievement (including related to instruction and pedagogy) and service.
