Position Title: Phlebotomist III

Work Location: South Burlington, VT (368 Dorset Street, Suite 3, South Burlington, VT 05403)

Assignment Duration: 3+ Months (Potential for Extension)

Shift: 1st Shift - Varying schedule between 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with possible rotating Saturdays


Position Summary

The Phlebotomist III is responsible for performing high-quality specimen collection and processing while delivering excellent patient care and customer service. This role includes venipuncture, specimen handling, laboratory support, and maintaining compliance with OSHA and laboratory safety standards. The position is based in South Burlington, VT and requires travel to multiple patient service centers as needed.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collections using straight and butterfly needles.
  • Collect blood, urine, and other specimens following established laboratory procedures.
  • Label, centrifuge, aliquot, split, freeze, package, and store specimens according to testing requirements.
  • Verify physician orders and accurately match laboratory requisitions to specimen labels.
  • Prepare and package specimens for transportation while maintaining specimen integrity.
  • Accurately update patient demographic and laboratory information.
  • Explain specimen collection procedures to patients in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance, decontamination, and documentation.
  • Answer telephone inquiries and communicate laboratory information appropriately.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, DEP, HIPAA, and laboratory safety regulations.
  • Participate in departmental training and annual competency requirements.
  • Assist with workflow improvements, troubleshooting, and other assigned laboratory duties.


Qualifications & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Phlebotomy Certification (required where mandated by state regulations).
  • Minimum 5-7 years of recent phlebotomy experience in a hospital, laboratory, or patient service center.
  • Minimum 6 months of experience performing venipuncture in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Experience with specimen processing, labeling, centrifugation, and specimen handling.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent customer service, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Reliable transportation required for travel between assigned locations.
  • Pediatric experience preferred but not required.
  • Geriatric patient experience preferred.


Work Environment & Travel

  • Home base: South Burlington, VT
  • Primary work location is a Patient Service Center and physician office environment.
  • Float coverage required throughout Vermont, including:

    • South Burlington
    • St. Albans
    • Enosburgh
    • Westminster
    • Brattleboro


  • Travel to Brattleboro and Westminster is expected only a few times per month.
  • Paid drive time is provided for applicable travel.
  • Candidate should reside near the South Burlington area.


Working Conditions

  • Perform approximately 5-30 blood draws per day.
  • Work with patients of all ages; pediatric experience is preferred.
  • Fast-paced outpatient laboratory/patient service center environment.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive specimen collection duties.
  • Work both independently and as part of a collaborative clinical team.
  • Initial training period of approximately 2-3 weeks, including training at additional sites.
