What to Expect

Tesla Energy is on a mission to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy - and the factory is where that mission becomes real. At Gigafactory New York, we design, build, and scale some of the most innovative energy products on the planet - supporting Solar, Residential Energy, and Supercharging business units that are redefining how the world powers itself. We move fast, operate at the edge of what's possible, and hold ourselves to world-class manufacturing standards.

We are looking for a Staff Engineer, Industrial Engineering & Production Planning to lead the integrated manufacturing systems and scheduling functions that keep GFNY Energy operating at its best. This is a senior engineering leadership role, reporting to the Senior Manager of Engineering and sitting within the plant's core leadership structure. You will own a team of roughly 10, comprising Industrial Engineers, IE Technicians, and Production Planners - two functions that must operate in tight coordination: how the factory is engineered and optimized, and how everybuildplan is sequenced and executed.

The right person for this role sets the standard. They build systems that scale, lead with data, drive clarity in ambiguous situations, and raise the bar for everyone around them. If you thrive in a high-ownership, high-accountability environment where your work directly shapes factory performance, product delivery, and long-range operational strategy - this role is for you.

What You'll Do
  • Lead and develop a cross-functional team of Industrial Engineers, IE Technicians, and Production Planners; set clear expectations, build accountability, invest in coaching and career development, and create a high-performance culture with strong leadership depth
  • Own capacity planning and labor optimization across all manufacturing lines, ensuring accurate labor and equipment models, analyzing workforce productivity data, and developing labor plans aligned to operational goals and budget constraints
  • Drive layout engineering and facility optimization, providing guidance on production area design, material flow paths, construction phasing, facility expansion, greenfield design, and efficient cost tracking frameworks for engineering and site operations
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives across safety, quality, delivery, cost, and growth using PDCA, Lean, and Six Sigma methodologies; develop and maintain standardized process data, metrics, reporting tools, and problem-solving frameworks
  • Develop and own production and downtime plans (weekly, quarterly, annual) across Energy product lines, proactively identifying risks, surfacing mitigations, and communicating impacts clearly to plant leadership and stakeholders
  • Manage near-term General Assembly scheduling (0-8 weeks), balancing mix targets, shop constraints, supply realities, and finished goods inventory requirements into a single executable plan across multiple product lines
  • Challenge and integrate supply-demand inputs by interrogating assumptions with a holistic understanding of the full supply-demand-production process and macroeconomic context; collaborate with Supply Chain Planning to incorporate capacity, mix, and logistics constraints using Theory of Constraints and optimization techniques
  • Lead cross-functional change management during disruptions inside the frozen window (0-48 hours) including equipment breakdowns, material shortages, and demand rebalances-build models, run analysis, and drive fast, optimal decisions
  • Own factory performance reporting and systems requirements, pulling data from ERP and manufacturing systems (MOS, AMP, SCADA, Andon), presenting insights via Tableau, and defining business requirements for scheduling tools using Jira in coordination with factory software teams
  • Coordinate new product introductions and own undefined gaps, representing operations in program launch reviews, developing option code frameworks, participating in Executive S&OP reviews, and proactively identifying and resolving critical factory issues without clear ownership

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Industrial, Mechanical, or Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent demonstrated experience
  • 8+ years of industrial, manufacturing, or mechanical engineering experience, including direct involvement in production planning, master scheduling, or materials management
  • Proven senior leadership experience managing cross-functional engineering and planning teams in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
  • Strong analytical skills - able to quantify and solve ambiguous, systems-level problems and translate analysis into clear, executive-ready recommendations
  • Experience developing and managing production schedules using Theory of Constraints, capacity modeling, and constraint-based optimization
  • Demonstrated ability to develop long-range production and downtime plans, articulate risk, and drive mitigation strategies
  • Experience challenging demand and supply planning assumptions with data and business judgment
  • Proficiency in data analysis and reporting tools (Excel, Tableau, or equivalent); ability to extract and interpret data from ERP and production management systems
  • Experience managing change through a manufacturing environment, including New Product Introduction (NPI) cycles
  • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills; able to synthesize complexity into clear narratives for diverse audiences
