Position Description:

The Carver College of Medicine at The University of Iowa invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Division of Hospital Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine. The Carver College of Medicine is anationally recognized academic medical center and ranks among the top 25 public medical schools in National Institutes of Health (NIH)funding. As Iowa's only comprehensive academic medical center,it serves a unique role within the state and region by providing specialized care for patients with the most complex medical conditions.The Department of InternalMedicine is an integral part of UI Health Care which is a partnership between the College of Medicine and The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is one of the largest teaching hospitals in the United States and has close affiliation with the adjacentIowa City Veterans Affairs Medical Center.With more than 50 faculty members, the Division of Hospital Medicine provides meaningful contributions to the tripartite mission. Divisional faculty and advanced practice providers (APPs) provide exceptional multidisciplinary patient care, make important contributions to the educational mission by serving as the core in-patient internal medicine education experience exposing residents to the broadest range of patients and creating an incredibly rich clinical experience, and are committed to advancing clinical research as a driver of innovation. The division provides high-quality clinical care to patients admitted across our multi-hospital health center - Medical Center University (MCU), Medical Center Downtown (MCD), Medical Center North Liberty (MCNL), and the Iowa Rehabilitation Hospital - and within the Presurgical Evaluation and Anemia Management Clinics. Division faculty play an important role in educating and mentoring medical students, residents, and other health care professionals. Division faculty are actively involved in clinical research and quality improvement initiatives.

The Division Director will work collaboratively with departmental and health system leadership to further strengthen and advance the division's clinical, educational, and research missions. Serving as the chief representative of the division, the Director will advocate for the division's interests while contributing to the broader goals of the department and health system. Responsibilities include faculty recruitment, appointments, and evaluations; managing educational, clinical, and research programs; fiscal planning and management; and both short-term and long-term strategic planning.

Education Requirement:


  • Candidates must have an MD, MD/PhD, DO or equivalent degree,and have completed an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine residency program.


Required Qualifications:


  • Qualifications consistent with appointment as an Associate Professor or full Professor in Internal Medicine in either the tenure track or clinical (non-tenure) track, commensurate with clinical expertise and scholarly accomplishments.
  • A distinguished record of achievement in teaching, clinical service, scholarship, or leadership, with evidence of regional and national recognition.
  • A minimum of five years of demonstrated academic and/or clinical leadership achievement in a large volume, high-performing, contemporary division with comparable complexity to the University of Iowa Division of Hospital Medicine.
  • Strong financial and operational management skills, including experience analyzing productivity metrics and managing resources effectively.
  • Demonstrated leadership as a creative and accomplished administrator who understands the changing healthcare environment ana the complexities of clinical operations.
  • Experience in building and leading new programs.
  • Experience educating and mentoring learners and professionals at multiple stages of training and career development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
  • A forward-thinking, collaborative leadership style that promotes growth through faculty recruitment, community engagement, and development of innovative clinical programs.
  • Must be eligible for licensure in the state of Iowa.


Certifications:


  • Candidates must be board certified in Internal Medicine.


Desirable Qualifications:


  • An open and direct communication style with a collegial presence that encourages consensus building, collaboration, and cooperation to both foster and maintain strong relationships.
  • Experience and/or leadership in clinical research, translational research, quality improvement initiatives, informatics, and/or education is desired.
  • Ability to engage the community through philanthropy to support education, research, clinic and service missions.
  • A leadership style that assists others before oneself and holds others accountable to agreed upon objectives.
  • A strong advocate for the division with the ability to engage, communicate, and negotiate well across all levels of the organization to support the division's objectives.
