Summary
The Completion Specialist provides comprehensive student success support to participants in the Parent Scholars Program. This position serves as a primary academic advisor and integrates advising, success coaching, and coordinated resource navigation to support continuous enrollment, academic progress, and program completion.
The role is designed to serve a limited, defined cohort of student parents and functions independently within established program guidelines, collaborating with program leadership and operational staff to ensure consistent and effective service delivery.
Essential Role Responsibilities

  • Serves as the primary academic advisor for assigned Parent Scholars by developing and maintaining individualized academic plans, including degree mapping and course sequencing, while conducting structured intake appointments that establish personalized success plans integrating academic, career, and personal goals.
  • Maintains regular contact with students to monitor progress and provide coaching that supports persistence and informed decisionmaking, while coordinating referrals to campus and community resources related to financial literacy, emergency assistance, childcare, and basic needs support.
  • Reinforces alignment between academic pathways and career or transfer goals by encouraging engagement with Career Services and supporting transition planning for employment or continued education.
  • In collaboration with program leadership and operations staff, supports student engagement activities, maintains effective partnerships across campus, and contributes to ongoing program coordination and improvement.

Experience Required
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Experience in college academic advising, student success coaching, or student support services.
  • Ability to interpret and apply academic policies and procedures.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in counseling, higher education, social services, or a related field.
  • Experience working with student parents, adult learners, or firstgeneration students.
  • Experience with resource referral coordination or case management.
  • Familiarity with community college environments and transfer pathways.

Physical Demand Summary

  • Office with occasional remote work environment as determined by program needs.
  • Regular interaction with students and campus partners.
  • Requires availability during established business hours aligned with student schedules.

As a participating member of the Maryland Retirement and Pension System, HCC offers two retirement options: The Pension, which requires a 7% employee contribution and The ORP, a 403(b) with a 7.25% employer contribution only. Employees in positions that do not require a bachelor's degree must participate in The Pension. Employees that possess a bachelor's degree and hold professional positions that require a bachelor's degree may choose to participate in either The Pension or The ORP.
