You'll take an active role in shaping financial strategy and decision-making across the Graduate School. This position calls for curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to translate complex financial data into meaningful insights that guide both short- and long-term planning.

What You'll Do:



  • Prepare monthly general and standard journal entries, income and balance sheet statements, and account reconciliations. Conduct special studies and develop or recommend accounting methods and procedures.
  • Assist in vendor management processes with other school units, including vendor selection, service pricing estimates, processing vendor payments such as accounts payable checks, employee reimbursements, honoraria, and other payments as assigned.
  • Research and resolve problems pertaining to financial reporting systems, ensuring compliance with university procedures and policies.
  • Assist with year-end closing activities. Prepare monthly year end projection reports and distribute to appropriate personnel.
  • Manage school conference travel awards, PhD student Assistance Funds, and similar programs as requested by leadership.
  • Assist in the preparation of the operational budget; review and analyze departmental budget requests and advise departments regarding changes in budgets to meet organizational requirements.
  • Assist with monitoring budget expenditures and prepare written reports and analyses to management setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions. Prepare and coordinate distribution of various financial reports and analyses for higher management to include financial analysis of individual departments.
  • Process financial aid transactions using PeopleSoft and financial transactions using the General Ledger accounting system, SAP S/4.
  • Maintain liaison with departmental business managers and administrative staff in the preparation and analysis of financial and student funding reports to provide information and to resolve problems concerning variances.
  • Maintain liaison with Student Health regarding Health and Dental Insurance enrollment reports and resolve issues. Process Dental and Health Insurance scholarships and payroll payments.
  • Provide analysis and reporting for various externally funded grants, such as the Sloan Foundation, Summer Research Opportunity Program, and other awards as assigned.
  • Serve as school lead for Duke corporate card management, reporting and distribution.
  • Provide front desk coverage support as needed.
  • Perform other related duties that support the financial operations and strategic goals of the Graduate School.

Required Qualifications:



  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Economics or a related field.
  • Experience: No experience required for candidates who possess a Bachelor's degree in a field of study related to the specific position.
  • Preferred Experience: Two years of experience in managerial accounting and/or financial analysis.
  • Skills:


    • Demonstrated knowledge in SAP S/4, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Access
    • Working knowledge of PeopleSoft preferred
    • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills

Anticipated Pay Range: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $59,829.00 to USD $86,700.00. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
