As the
Assistant Director, Durham and Community Affairs, you will
- Plan, develop, and manage robust pre-K to K-12 literacy and mathematics programs in communities, forging impactful partnerships with Duke departments and external stakeholders.
- Oversee the execution of America Reads/America Counts (ARAC) and other tutor events, manage all operational logistics, and ensure rigorous adherence to federal and university policies and grant requirements. Drive community engagement efforts to enhance educational outcomes and foster lasting relationships in Durham through the education strategic council, Regional Spelling Bee and other initiatives.
- Support civic engagement opportunities that encourage students to develop their citizenship skills. This position reports to the Senior Director of Education in Duke Community Affairs (DCA).
This is a one-year, term-limited position with the possibility of extension based on funding and programmatic needs.

What You'll Do:
Program Strategy, Development, Implementation and Evaluation (25%)
- Coordinate the implementation of comprehensive literacy and mathematics programs, including detailed planning and execution of ARAC and L2S initiatives to meet educational benchmarks.
- Collaborate with Duke departments, Durham Public Schools (DPS), and community organizations to innovate and implement effective educational strategies that address local needs.

- Provide programmatic analyses using staff, partner, and tutor evaluations to determine impact and progress of programs.
Training and Logistics (25%)
- Organize and evaluate diverse professional development trainings in collaboration with campus and community partners such as Program in Education and the Duke Center for Community-Engaged Scholarship, ensuring continuous improvement and adherence to best practices in education, civic engagement, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Antiracism in alignment with Duke University's commitment.
- Provide leadership and mentorship to NCCE AmeriCorps VISTA members, student tutors, and volunteers, fostering their professional growth and maximizing their contributions to program success by performing performance evaluations and goal setting.
- Plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate Fall and Spring semester Orientations and trainings in collaboration with Duke's Service-Learning Department's Partners for Success Program and the Duke Center for Community-Engaged Scholarship.
- Oversee the development and implementation of the DCA van transportation scheduling process for Duke tutors.
Grants, Operations and Compliance Management (15%)
- Develop, refine, and enforce program protocols, procedures, and policies to streamline operations, including oversight of student personnel, payroll management, and risk mitigation.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with federal and university policies, managing grant requirements, reporting obligations, and fiscal stewardship.
- Collaborate with compliance agents internally (e.g., Office of Youth Protection, North Carolina Campus Engagement, and Post Award Financial Management) and externally (National and State AmeriCorps Commissions) to ensure that full compliance of awards and policies are met.
- Oversee the Doing Good - Education grants annual application process and collaborate with internal and external partners to introduce funding opportunities.
- Prepare grant applications and reports in accordance with university policies and sponsor requirements.
Partnership Development and Stakeholder Engagement (25%)
- Work closely with the Senior Director of Education to develop and implement new programs and initiatives to enhance educational outcomes for programming, including the Education Strategic Council.
- Cultivate and sustain strategic partnerships with key stakeholders at Duke University, Durham Public Schools (DPS), and community organizations to optimize program impact and sustainability.
- Follow DCA processes for developing and maintaining Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with partners and districts.
- Liaise with the DPS Foundation to review annual reporting and new initiatives.
- Serve as liaison between Scripps National Spelling Bee and participating partner schools, planning and coordinating the regional spelling bee following all Scripps guidelines and trainings, and communicate with Regional Bee winner ensuring all National Bee registration information has been provided.
Communication and Outreach (10%)
- Develop communication strategies for the DCA website, digital platforms, social media, and targeted outreach with Student Affairs, Duke News, and Communications departments.
- Represent the program on university and professional organizations, associations, committees, and conferences.
- Communicate regularly with Durham Public School's Volunteer Background Check Compliance Officer to ensure all tutors and staff have completed the DPS Background Checks. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein

Minimum Qualifications
Education
Position requires analytical, organizational and communications skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.
Experience
Work requires a minimum of three years management experience or an equivalent combination of relevant education AND/OR experience.
Anticipated Pay Range: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $59,829.00 to USD $86,700.00.
