DESCRIPTION

The POCT Sr. CLS Specialist/Technical Consultant (TC) supports the Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) program by providing technical, regulatory, and operational oversight across ambulatory clinical sites. This role functions in a Technical Consultant (TC) capacity under delegation from the Laboratory Director and is responsible for device setup, configuration, validation, troubleshooting, quality oversight, training governance, and regulatory compliance for tests within POCT, in accordance with CLIA, California CDPH-LFS, CAP standards, manufacturer instructions, and laboratory policies.

Responsibilities include POCT device setup, configuration, validation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and connectivity support; middleware administration (e.g., Telcor); Epic build support, test mapping, and result transmission troubleshooting; operator access management; QC/PT review; corrective action follow-up; competency and training oversight; policy and SOP maintenance; regulatory compliance activities; and support of inspections, audits, licensing, and accreditation requirements.

This role also supports new clinic onboarding and implementation, performs site visits and compliance audits across UC San Diego Health ambulatory POCT clinics, provides technical guidance to POCT staff, and supports quality improvement, workflow standardization, and data integrity across multiple testing locations.

Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or related field.

  • Active California General Clinical Laboratory Scientist License.

  • Four (4) years of experience as a licensed General Clinical Laboratory Scientist within the designated subspecialty; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with laboratory instrumentation, troubleshooting, and validation.

  • Experience with training, competency assessment, proficiency testing, quality control review, and compliance oversight.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and data tracking/reporting.

  • Minimum of 2 years of POCT experience in hospital or ambulatory settings.

  • Experience supporting waived, PPMP, and moderate/high complexity testing under CLIA, CAP, and California CDPH-LFS regulations.

  • Experience with device troubleshooting, connectivity, middleware administration, and interface workflows (e.g., Telcor, Epic).

  • Experience with Epic/Telcor build, test mapping, result transmission, operator management, and interface troubleshooting.

  • Experience supporting laboratory inspections, audits, corrective actions, and regulatory compliance activities.

  • Experience developing and maintaining laboratory policies, procedures, and SOPs.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage multiple POCT sites, priorities, and projects.

  • Demonstrated experience functioning in a Technical Consultant, Lead CLS, or equivalent role with responsibility for independent decision-making and regulatory compliance within a POCT program.

  • Hematology and general chemistry experience.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $128,976 - $169,984 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $61.77 - $81.41

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
