Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
In collaboration with campus partners and community stakeholders, OSSR implements initiatives and services to enhance student success. These efforts focus on improving freshman retention rates, increasing academic support for both freshmen and upperclassmen, developing strategies to boost persistence and academic progression, and cultivating a campus-wide culture of student success.
Additionally, OSSR prepares students for service learning, experiential learning, internships, and future careers, ensuring they are well-equipped for post-graduation success.
Description of Work
GEAR UP North Carolina (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs in North Carolina) is a college access initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Education and designed to increase the number of first-generation, low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in post-secondary education. The GEAR UP Success Coach will work with Elizabeth City State University and GEAR UP NC to support first year college students from targeted high schools. Coaches are expected to complete various training programs, engage in observation and debriefing processes, and complete certifications. The GEAR UP Success Coach is also expected to encourage interest in post-secondary education and build support for student success.
Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position
A Bachelors Degree with 2 years of experience working with high school and/or college age students. Knowledge of college services. Candidate must demonstrate ability to exercise independent judgment and show strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.

* Understand the confidentiality of student records and comply with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act ( FERPA)

* Serve as a representative of GEAR UP at designated middle schools, high schools, and related events to promote student engagement, postsecondary access, and enrollment at the partner institution.
* Coordinate and assist with the planning and facilitation of campus visits for GEAR UP students and families.
* Participate in required GEAR UP NC and InsideTrack professional development and training sessions.
* Deliver individualized coaching sessions designed to support students' academic persistence, goal setting, and career planning.
* Assist students in identifying strengths, clarifying values and goals, addressing barriers, and developing actionable academic success plans.
* Maintain accurate and confidential student records in designated contact management systems.
* Initiate and schedule coaching appointments, monitor student engagement, and document interactions using platforms such as EduMetrics, DegreeWorks, and EAB Navigate360 (E4U).
* Provide timely updates and feedback to the Access & Success Manager to support student progress and continuous program improvement.
* Evaluate and report on student retention indicators as planned and requested.

* Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), workshop modules, and structured programming materials to support student success initiatives and ensure consistency in service delivery.
* Maintain inventory of program supplies and materials; track, organize, and submit receipts and required documentation in accordance with university and grant compliance procedures.
* Contribute collaboratively to advancing the mission and objectives of GEAR UP and Elizabeth City State University.
* Perform additional related duties as assigned.

* Provide academic advising to freshmen, sophomores, and transfer students (as assigned)
* Guide students in areas including academic planning, course selection, study strategies, academic policies, and resolution of academic concerns.
* Interpret and communicate university policies, procedures, and curriculum requirements.
* Maintain advising documentation in compliance with federal, state, and university regulations.
* Utilize systems such as EAB Navigate360 (E4U) to schedule appointments, upload academic plans, and monitor student performance.
* Conduct degree audits using Degree Works to track student progress toward graduation.
* Support new and transfer student orientation initiatives (e.g., First Year events, Open House events, etc)
* Assist students in navigating enrollment-related matters, including admissions, financial aid, and registration clearance.
* Conduct student success workshops and individualized and group coaching sessions.
* Serve as the co-administrator of selected student success platforms.
