Operations Geologist provides high-quality, real-time geologic support for drilling operations based out of Diamondback Energy's Midland, TX office. This role integrates subsurface interpretation with operational decision-making to place wells in optimal reservoir rock and maximize lateral placement in accordance with the development plan. The Operations Geologist works closely with drilling engineers, asset geologists, reservoir engineers, and data analysts and serves as the geologic authority during active drilling operations. While continuous overnight monitoring is not required, the position requires after-hours responsiveness to address operational or technical issues as they arise.

Job Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with optimization and asset geologists on rigline well planning; produce geologic prognoses
  • Manage vendor setup and project execution (geosteering, mudlogging, mass spec, etc.)
  • Partner with directional drillers/planners to stay in the target window; update well plan in real time
  • Integrate real-time data with pre-drill models, offsets, seismic interpretations, and structural grids
  • Provide real-time geologic guidance and technical support using MWD/LWD, mudlogs, cuttings, seismic, wireline, and drilling parameters
  • Geosteer horizontal wells with multiple interpretations; anticipate and communicate geologic hazards
  • Attend daily meetings and maintain open communication with asset, optimization, and drilling teams
  • Document operations/lessons learned; provide formation-top depths for regulatory reporting; support geoscience databases and data pipelines

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology or a related field
  • 2+ years of geology experience in an oilfield-related role
  • Proficiency with StarSteer software
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, attention-to-detail, and communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively across multiple disciplines
  • Willingness to respond to technical inquiries after hours, as needed

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in well planning, geosteering, and drilling operations
  • Skills in geoscience software such as Petra, Kingdom, or similar subsurface interpretation platforms
  • Strong working knowledge of TIBCO Spotfire and associated applications
  • Experience in Snowflake and maintaining data pipelines
  • Familiarity with Permian Basin
