JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Penn State Scranton, a member of the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) and the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), is accepting applications for a Part-Time Head Women's Basketball Coach.

The Head Coach is responsible for all aspects of the Women's Basketball program, including practice preparation, competition coaching, student-athlete development, and recruitment of academically qualified student-athletes. This position is primarily in-season, with off-season responsibilities related to recruiting and program development. The Head Coach will lead the program under the direction of the Director of Athletics and may have the opportunity to work with an Assistant Coach.

Primary Responsibilities

Program Leadership & Coaching

  • Plan, organize, and conduct effective practices and competitions.
  • Provide game day coaching and in-game decision-making.
  • Oversee player development, including athletic, academic, and personal growth.
  • Establish and maintain a positive, inclusive, and team-oriented culture.
  • Provide vision and leadership aligned with Penn State values and the athletics mission.

Recruitment & Retention

  • Recruit, evaluate, and retain academically qualified and talented student-athletes.
  • Maintain communication with prospective student-athletes and families.
  • Ensure recruiting activities are conducted in compliance with institutional and conference regulations.

Program Operations

  • Manage all day-to-day operations of the Women's Basketball program under the direction of the Athletic Director.
  • Plan and implement practice and competition schedules.
  • Oversee team events, travel, and related logistics as assigned.
  • Provide feedback and recommendations to the Director of Athletics for weekly, seasonal, conference, and national awards.
  • Collaborate effectively with athletic department staff, campus partners, and administrators.

Student-Athlete Experience & Community Engagement

  • Support and promote the academic success and personal development of student-athletes.
  • Assist in developing opportunities for team participation in community service activities.
  • Use service experiences to teach life lessons emphasizing respect, hard work, education, leadership, and service to others.

Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure strict adherence to PSUAC, USCAA, and NCAA Division III rules and regulations.
  • Maintain required certifications, including CPR and First Aid.

Education & Experience

Education

  • Required: High school diploma
  • Preferred: Bachelor's degree strongly preferred

Coaching Experience

  • Required: Coaching or playing experience at the high school level or higher.
  • Preferred: Collegiate coaching experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of the sport of basketball, including rules, strategies, and skill development.
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and time-management abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively with student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and staff.
  • Knowledge of PSUAC, USCAA, and NCAA Division III compliance regulations.
  • Experience with event coordination and personnel management preferred.

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
