Job Summary

#CA-PS
Inspects campus construction projects for conformance with project plans and specifications, applicable codes and standards, policies and procedures; quality assurance. Reports to the FM-Asset Management, GIS Supervisor and is responsible for general excavation inspection, Underground Service Alert (USA) administration, and utility locating for distribution systems including electrical, gas, steam, chilled water, domestic water, surface water, utility water, deionized water, storm drain, sewer, fire alarm, and street lighting for campus projects. This position is the central point of contact and approval for all campus utility locating and excavation, and is responsible for administering the campus standards, safety policies, and procedures involving underground infrastructure and hardscape. Coordinates construction excavation inspection and underground utilities locating activities with other campus departments as required prior to and during construction. Performs work independently with minimal direction.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Certification in specialty skilled trade.
  • Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
  • No Minimum Education Required
  • Min. 5 years of experience as an excavation inspector/locator, land surveyor, or equivalent experience in a related skilled trade.
  • Skills coordinating work with customers, project managers, other crafts, and inspectors; inspecting job sites and reviewing detailed plans, drawings and oral directions to plan work; assisting other crafts as needed.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, diagrams, drawings, instructions, manuals, technical data, and related technical materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced experience in plumbing/civil infrastructure construction field inspection and utilities locating for commercial, industrial, and institutional projects.
  • Advanced expertise in plan review for complex campus projects, including the ability to identify issues, evaluate alternatives, assess impacts, and recommend effective solutions.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and analytical skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, resolve problems proactively, and work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in digital tools and documentation (e.g., inspections, field reports, photography, and Microsoft Office applications), along with knowledge of University policies, procedures, and Campus Standard Design Guidelines.

Department Overview

Uses advanced inspection skills and utilities locating concepts with a full understanding of industry practices, campus policies and procedures to perform highly complex inspections of all underground utilities excavation work for new construction, alterations and repairs. Reviews construction documents, specifications, and bid documents for construction features within specialty area. Participates in project design development planning, site investigation and pre-construction potholing efforts, pre-dig meetings, and acceptance procedures. Exercises sound technical judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions and ensuring compliance with all applicable building codes, standards, specifications. Coordinates closely w/ campus personnel to ensure timely, accurate and safe completion of assigned projects.

Work Environment
