Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Associate Vice Provost (AVP), and working in collaboration with the Director of Teaching (DoT), responsible for administration, coordination, management of instructional activities and records management. Manage day to day administrative issues; draft written correspondence and other documents; and independently respond to diverse inquiries and requests made to the Directors, AVP and the Writing Center (WC) and the program. Plan, revise, and implement instructor resources, courses and schedules. Advise and inform faculty and students on instructor resources, courses, and schedules. Serve as resource to personnel, search, and other WC ad hoc committees. Use the Integrated Curriculum Management System to add and change courses. Schedule courses, and review and revise copy for the Class Schedule and Registration Guide and General Catalog. Complete Desii editing. Process Summer Sessions and scheduling and coordinate events.

Provide direct supervisory oversight of assigned staff. Responsibilities include recruitment and hiring; onboarding and training; assigning and scheduling work; approval of timecards; performance management and evaluation; and delivery of ongoing coaching and constructive feedback in accordance with UC Davis policies and applicable labor agreements.

This position plans, revises, and implements instructor resources, courses, and schedules, and advises faculty and students on related matters. It serves as a resource for personnel, search, and other WC ad hoc committees. Using the Integrated Curriculum Management System, the role adds and updates courses, schedules classes, and reviews and revises copy for the Class Schedule and Registration Guide and the General Catalog.

Additional responsibilities include processing student evaluations, completing Desii editing, managing Summer Sessions, and coordinating events.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience and training.
  • Experience managing day-to-day administrative functions and providing administrative and program or department management in a university/college or similar environment. Understanding of professional and disciplinary fields.
  • Experience working collaboratively and productively with diverse groups of individuals at all levels within a complex organization.
  • Organization skills to determine and implement workload priorities and establish work procedures.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to interact and communicate with students, faculty and staff regarding academic requirements and program criteria; and collaboratively and professionally in person, in writing and on the phone, using sensitivity and discretion in handling difficult situations.
  • Analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills to pro-actively identify and define problem areas, to analyze complex data, develop statistics, prepare charts and graphs, and develop meaningful solutions to specific problems. Professional competency in writing, editing and proofreading.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail. Decision-making skills to work with ambiguities where clear guidelines are not available.
  • Computer skills working with Microsoft Access, Excel, Outlook and other PC software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in writing studies, management, or related area.
  • Experience using Banner or similar student information systems to schedule courses, generate reports, and support instructional operations; experience managing student employees.
  • In-depth knowledge of university and campus policies and procedures related to Undergraduate Education, including entry-level writing, upper-division requirements, Writing Center operations, and UWP courses and curriculum.
  • Experience coordinating instructional programs across multiple systems and stakeholders, including Summer Sessions planning, course evaluations, and instructional data reporting.

Department Overview

The Writing Center (WC) offers 645+ general education writing courses (entry-level, firstyear, and upper division) annually with a teaching staff of approximately 72 Federation faculty members, 1 Senate faculty member, and 20+ graduate student instructors. The unit also administers the Senate-mandated Writing Placement Survey (WPS) and Entry Level Writing (ELW) Requirement, and the Upper Division Composition Exam (UDCE). The WC also offers a suite of writing support services including writing consultations (tutoring) and workshops for undergraduate, graduate students, post-docs, and faculty.

This position is part of 10 diverse operational/academic units in UE which are responsible for leadership in sustaining and improving the quality of undergraduate education and line responsibility for operation of 10 operational/campus wide academic units, namely Academic Advising Enrichment, the Center for Educational Effectiveness, First Year Seminars, Quarter at Aggie Square, Summer Sessions, UC Davis Washington Center, the Undergraduate Research Center, the University Honors Program, and The Writing Center.
