Position Summary

The Sterile Processing Technician provides sterile equipment and supplies to Boynton Health departments. This work includes decontamination, cleaning, sterilization and processing of supplies and equipment, following guidelines from federal and state agencies, manufacturer and clinic infection control.

This position is responsible for working independently and with team members to ensure that all instrumentation is properly decontaminated, assembled, inspected, packaged, sterilized, and/or high level disinfected. All instruments must be distributed, tracked and stored in a safe, secure, aseptic and timely manner throughout the clinic.

Overview of Responsibilities

Technical

  • Collects used and contaminated equipment, instruments, and supplies for sorting and decontamination.
  • Cleans instruments and supplies, removing contaminants and waste to ensure items are free of foreign matter prior to sterilization.
  • Operates and maintains decontamination equipment, including washers/disinfectors, ultrasonic machines, and high-level disinfection systems.
  • Performs decontamination, assembly, packaging, labeling, and sterilization of instruments and supplies according to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assembles instrument sets and trays accurately; prepares, wraps, and organizes equipment for medical examinations and procedures.
  • Prepares, packs, and delivers sterilized instruments and equipment needed for clinical procedures.
  • Operates sterilizers safely and documents sterilization loads and processes according to established standards.
  • Conducts quality assurance checks on equipment and sterilization processes; processes and interprets biological controls and tests per guidelines.
  • Maintains records related to sterilization procedures, sterilized items, equipment maintenance, and supplies.
  • Follows infection control, safety standards, and departmental protocols while performing all duties.
  • Responds to urgent requests with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Identifies and reports unsafe conditions, equipment malfunctions, or sterilization issues to the supervisor or lead.
  • Performs other duties consistent with the job classification and position description.

  • Maintains compliance with applicable OSHA, HIPAA, MERTKA, and confidentiality policies.
  • Adheres to University, Boynton Health and Dental Clinic policies and procedures.
  • Keeps the supervisor informed of any issues with systems or procedures, etc.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement projects and safety/emergency drills, as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age with education and/or experience needed to meet required principal competencies as listed on the job description.
  • Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) Certification as a Central Processing Technician (CRCST); Certification must be maintained for the duration of employment.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with audiences at all levels of an organization; Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient with computer systems, along with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google products.
  • Ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including working objectively with individuals whose lived experiences, identities, attitudes, and behaviors may differ from their own.
  • Must have schedule flexibility and reliability; works up to 32 hours per week.
  • Prefer two years of experience in the handling and sterilization processing of surgical/medical/dental instrumentation within the past four years.
  • Prefers knowledge of medical terminology.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk, sit, push, pull, use hands and fingers, hold, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk or hear, or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds without assistance, occasionally lift and/or move over 50 pounds with assistance, Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Pay and Benefits

Hourly Pay Range: $23.89 - $27.98; depending on education/qualifications/experience. Pay range is non-negotiable.

Time Appointment: 80% Appointment (32 hours per week)
