General Description Under the direction of the project engineer, the Field Engineer will: track quantities, cost, and scheduling for assigned Company crews as well as subcontractors; participate in scheduling and developing a work plan for subcontractors on a project; ensure assigned as work being performed by the subcontractors and Company crews is executed and completed in accordance with the project specifications. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Key Duties and Responsibilities Project Safety
- Trained in safety policies and procedures
- Enforce the standard safety procedures while onsite during work hours
- Respond to, investigate and document any accident scene(s). Review the accident protocol to ensure strict conformance and communicate updates as needed
- Demonstrate the Company safety culture, leading by example
- Obtain and provide all required safety equipment to field employees prior to work occurring onsite
- Responsible for locating utilities; maintaining Excel logs and assuring all tickets are current
Project Subcontractors
- Obtain thorough quotes from multiple qualified subs to perform work as scoped for the project
- Generate draft Excel subcontract documents and associated pay sheets, send to project manager for review and approval
- Ensure contracts are signed and processed in a timely manner and maintained throughout the project
- Ensure change orders are prepared and maintained in a timely manner throughout the project
- Perform subcontractor safe starts
- Inspect subcontractor work, notify management of non-conformance
- Measure subcontractor completed quantities, update the subcontractor quantity logs, generate monthly Excel pay sheets and negotiate the quantities with subcontractors for partial payments
- Obtain subcontractor schedules and provide them to management team for review
- Communicate and verify subcontractor needs prior to arrival onsite.
- Ensure adherence to Company's safety procedures and protocols
Project Schedule
- Maintains and updates work schedules for subcontractor(s) and field work
- Provides the project engineer and manager with accurate schedules and updates on a weekly basis
- Use P6 scheduling software to produce and maintain discipline specific schedule(s)
Project Budget
- Maintain thorough knowledge of the project(s) budgets and cost codes
- Ensure proper cost codes are utilized for project specific payroll and invoices
- Responsible for reviewing and tracking quantities (cost control quantities) in Excel and SAP
- Provide and discuss any and all anomalies (good and bad) in the budgets with the Chief Estimator
- Perform takeoff(s) of project plans as needed to obtain and verify as-builts to determine remaining quantities needed in Planswift, Bluebeam, and AGTEK.
- Update quantities of work performed daily in Excel quantity tracking log
Project Payroll
- Discuss all personnel related problems with the project engineer, superintendent and project manager as needed
- Verify crew makeup is correct and in conformance to the budget, communicate any differences to superintendent and project manager
- Integrate time in SAP for all personnel daily to keep costs accurate and up to date
- Track field employee absences in SAP and provide to project management/human resources for employees file tracking
Project Purchasing
- Responsible for purchasing and ensuring on time delivery of appropriate site materials that are in conformance to project specifications
- Complete purchase order(s) or change order(s) prior to purchasing the material needed
- Obtain delivery tickets, enter deliveries into SAP and properly process ticket(s) for record keeping and invoice processing
- Work with superintendent, project engineer and project manager to ensure materials are ordered and delivered to project site in a timely manner in accordance with the schedule
- Prepare and submit shop drawings as needed for permanent materials needed for the project through Citrix Sharefile.
- Ensure shop drawings are in accordance with project specifications, and properly dimensioned to work as shown on project plans
Project Communication
- Communicate field operations with project support as often as needed
- Responsible for archiving and recording all correspondence regarding the project
- Interact with field employees including superintendents, foreman and subcontractors to ensure work is performed in compliance with project schedules
- Provides and communicate accurate administrative and accounting information from the field to project engineer
- Good written and oral communication skills

- Proficient PC skills including a proficiency in various software used such as Microsoft Office, Windows, IOS, Primavera, and SAP (preferred)
- Familiarity with construction industry practices is required.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with job site supervisors and fellow employees.
Education and Experience. This position typically is not an entry-level job, as it requires previous experience as a Construction Engineer.
- A Bachelor's Degree of Science in Civil Engineering or Construction Management (or equivalent work experience) is required.
- A minimum of one (1) to three (3) years of experience is required.
- Experience as a Construction Scheduling Engineer or in a Project Controls position is required, with an emphasis on asphalt, roads, highways, and bridges preferred.
Physical Demands The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by a Field Engineer to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Regularly required to sit and/or stand during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day.
- Employee is occasionally required to stoop, bend, walk, crouch, and climb.
- Ability to lift, on a frequent basis, at least 25 pounds and carry up to 15 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Continuous mental attention required to complete tasks in an efficient manner.
- Exposure to dust, dirt grease and noise.
- Work can be performed at heights up to 60 feet, requiring the employee to climb ladders, scaffolds and stair towers, often with narrow steps and passageways.
- Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground and slopes in varying weather conditions.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, based on project need(s) and demand(s).
Work Environment The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those that a Field Engineer encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Work environment may periodically expose individual to various levels of noise, grease, and dust that is typically associated with a plant; either engineering controls and/or personal protective equipment is required, to ensure exposure limit does not exceed OSHA specifications.
- Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
- Work may involve exposure to a variety of substances commonly found on asphalt and plant sites such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline and diesel fuel; however, no levels above OSHA Permissible exposure limit.
