Overview:

Veeco is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer. This position will spend a substantial amount of time working with the design team to identify and resolve manufacturability risks early, preventing issues from escaping into production. Ensure all manufacturing objectives-assembly, test, serviceability, integration, and teardown-are addressed during design. Develop all manufacturing processes, tools, and documentation to launch the design or implement changes with complete confidence. Drive process improvements and ensure risk mitigation actions are completed before production builds.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with Design Engineering on new designs and design changes with the intent to vet the design and ensure all manufacturing requirements are achieved.
  • Review BOMs, models, drawings, schematics, and system and component test plans for all designs. Ensure testing is successfully completed on new designs or significant updates prior to release.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables are on schedule and escalate delays as needed.
  • Identify and address manufacturability risks early.
  • Provide actionable feedback and recommend solutions to design challenges.
  • Integrate manufacturing requirements and best practices early in the design process.
  • Review complete design solutions from mechanical, electrical, and software teams.
  • Collaborate with suppliers on critical parts before final design release.
  • Implement Design for Assembly (DFA), Manufacturing, and Design for Test (DFT) best practices.
  • Identify critical inspection points.

Concurrent Engineering:

  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to systematically evaluate new designs and proposed design changes from a manufacturing perspective, identifying potential risks related to functionality, manufacturability, and lead time before they impact production.
  • Champion the principles of concurrent engineering by integrating manufacturing requirements and best practices early in the design process, ensuring that all engineering deliverables meet both operational and quality standards.
  • Facilitate cross-functional reviews of Bills of Material (BOM), drawings, and test plans, ensuring accuracy and completeness, and drive the resolution of any identified issues prior to design release.
  • Ensure new product and design changes include complete solutions from mechanical, electrical, and software teams by attending concept and design reviews.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to optimize product design and specifications. Implement best known methods related to Design for Assembly (DFA), Manufacturing, and Design for Test (DFT).

Problem Solving:

  • Analyze and resolve technical and operational problems using structured methods (Fishbone, 8D, SPC).
  • Implement Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Drive cost reduction, production method improvements, and product quality enhancements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (manufacturing or mechanical) and a minimum 5 years of relevant experience, including experience with design.
  • Experience transitioning products from design to manufacturing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proven experience leading and supporting New Product Introduction (NPI) processes from initial design concept through manufacturing and production.
  • Experience in complex equipment or product manufacturing is preferred.
  • Solid understanding of reviewing designs for assembly, test, integration/installation, tool teardown, modularity, and serviceability.
  • Ability to analyze designs to ensure completeness across mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and software disciplines prior to ECO release.
  • Experience with SolidWorks Composer, tolerance analysis, design checks, and interference analysis.
  • Experience using modular BOMs and designing reusable parts for maximum scaling efficiency.
  • Vacuum (UHV) semiconductor equipment and cleanroom experience highly desirable.
  • SAP enterprise experience a plus.
  • Knowledge of design and quality tools to evaluate manufacturability and perform Design Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (DFMEA).
  • Experience with SPC and process control methodologies; experience using Minitab, JMP, or similar tools is a plus.
  • Certification in Lean Six Sigma is a plus.
  • Ability to travel up to 20%, depending on product lifecycle stage.
