Job Summary

The Staff Research Associate I/2 will support research in the Dunn Lab focused on understanding how visual information is processed in the retina and how these processes are disrupted in disease. The incumbent will maintain mouse colonies, perform genotyping, and provide technical support for molecular biology, cell biology, and imaging-based experiments. Responsibilities also include laboratory organization and management, editing and keeping protocols up to date, maintaining detailed experimental records, and working closely with the Principal Investigator and other laboratory members. The position requires strong attention to detail, motivation to learn new techniques, and the ability to achieve independence in routine laboratory procedures.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $28.04 - $45.09 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Department of Ophthalmology is one of the leading ophthalmology departments in clinical care, training, and research nationwide. The Department of Ophthalmology is one of the largest recipients of federal grant funds among peer departments and has been in the top 10 in NIH funding. Additionally, we have been the #1 recipient of the Research to Prevent Blindness funding nationwide with nearly $1.2 million granted in a single year. Overall, the Department has a wide-ranging portfolio of 60 active research grants.

The Department's overall operating budget exceeds $40,000,000 per year. Ophthalmology conducts its patient care, teaching, research, and public service activities currently at multiple UCSF campuses: Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Veteran's Administration Medical Center (VAMC), Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG), and Benioff Children's Hospital at Mission Bay. The Department occupies over 60,000 of assignable square feet of space at various sites across UCSF campuses for research, academic and clinical activities. The Department supports 40 full-time clinical faculty, 12 basic scientists, 50+ volunteer and visiting faculty, 25 postdoctoral scholars, 20 residents and interns, clinical fellows, graduate students, visiting researchers, as well as clinic and research staff.

Required Qualifications

SRA I:

  • BA/BS/BSc degree in Molecular and Cell Biology or related biological science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of RNA, DNA isolation
  • Lab skills including PCR, qPCR, westerns and immunohistochemistry, histopathology and microscopy
  • Knowledge of Ocular dissection
  • Cell and molecular biology experience as obtained in school

SRA II:
  • BA/BS/BSc degree in Molecular and Cell Biology or related biological science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Knowledge of RNA, DNA isolation
  • Lab skills including PCR, qPCR, westerns and immunohistochemistry, histopathology and microscopy
  • Knowledge of Ocular dissection
  • Cell and molecular biology experience as obtained in school

Preferred Qualifications


  • Animal husbandry and rodent behavior experience as obtained in school
