Required QUALIFICATIONS




Required Education:

  • Two years of post-secondary education or training with course work in the area of assignment is required.
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered qualifying.

Required Experience:
  • Two years of experience tutoring, mentoring, or otherwise providing one-on-one or group guidance to students at the college level is required.
Licensure or Certification Requirements

Preferred Education
Associate's Degree or higher in subject area for tutoring.
Preferred Experience

  • Tutoring or other student-facing work experience at a community college.
  • Work with/experience with recent GIS classes or ARC-GIS software.

Position Purpose:
Support student learning in GIS, Computer Science, and other classes through one-on-one and group tutoring sessions, bolstering strategic learning habits, subject matter knowledge, and confidence.
Essential Functions:

  • Works independently and as part of a team.
  • Tutors students in specific GIS subject matter as recommended by program leads, curriculum, and faculty in the area.
  • Tutors students in specific CIT/Computer Science courses as recommended by program leads, curriculum, and faculty in the area.
  • May tutor/coach in other areas with significant experience or expertise.
  • Mentors peer/student tutors as assigned.
  • Assists students to work through assigned materials or self-instructional modules.
  • Observes and diagnoses areas that are causing the student problems in their course assignments, work, or personal correspondence or communication.
  • Discusses problem areas with students and provides explanation, clarification, reference materials or examples.
  • Reports needs and issues to the Academic and Tutoring team as needed.
  • Problem solves and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards (training provided); maintains confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Statement:
This position works with the Academic and Tutoring Services Coordinator team and reports to the Director of Academic & Tutoring Services.
Physical Demands/Working Environment:
This position works indoors and is exposed to usual office working conditions that include office noises and interruptions, such as printers, telephones, and visitors. Work may require sitting for two (2) to three (3) hour periods, working in a variety of spaces (small conference spaces, large open spaces, computer labs, etc.) This position may work independently in the GIS or CIT lab for some evening or weekend hours. Work Safely.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of best practices in Social Science, Humanities, and Computer Science coaching and tutoring


Ability to:

  • Provide positive reinforcement and encourage students and/or tutors
  • Work independently and as part of a team
  • Adhere to a regular schedule with potential evening or weekend hours
  • Clear oral and written communication skills
  • Send clear written email and electronic messages to students, colleagues, and community members
  • Work in person (not remotely) during all shifts
  • Maintain a patient, caring and respectful attitude with students
  • Work well with students of varied backgrounds and experiences
  • Provide support to employees working to meet accreditation standards through evaluation and assessment of student outcomes
