Essential Job Duties
The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University invites applicants for a 9-month, professional faculty position as an Assistant or Associate Professor of the Practice in Natural Resources Management of Energy Installation Sites. This position is 75% teaching and 25% service. Responsibilities include teaching an average of 15 credit hours per year, including courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, both in-person and distance education, and advising undergraduate students and graduate students in the online Master of Environmental Assessment ( MEA) program as assigned. Service responsibilities (25%) include supporting workforce development programs in renewable energy, serving on department and university committees, facilitating professional development for students, guiding students in capstone projects in area of expertise (stakeholder engagement or environmental impact assessment), and engaging with professional societies and other stakeholders in renewable energy assessment.
Teaching and Mentoring Responsibilities (75%):
The candidate will teach in-person and online courses in natural resource management and renewable energy development such as ET 220 Solar Photovoltaics Assessment, NR484 Environmental Impact Assessment, ES 300 Energy and the Environment, and EA 521 Fundamentals of Renewable Energy Site Assessment. The candidate is expected to develop and teach a new online graduate course on a priority topic for environmental assessment, as relevant to natural resource management of energy installation and other development sites. Mentoring includes advising graduate students in the online MEA program, including for their capstone projects.
Service Responsibilities (25%):
The candidate will support student engagement in department, university, and state/federal programs in renewable energy development and land asset management of energy installation sites. The candidate is expected to represent the department and university at relevant energy conferences, participate in on-campus recruiting, and contribute to administrative management of academic and non-credit programs for natural resources, environmental assessment, and energy management. The candidate also will serve on committees (at the department, college, and university levels) engage with students through student organizations, undergraduate research, or other extracurricular activities; and participate in professional society activities.
Other Responsibilities
Additional Administrative Role - Assistant Program Coordinator for Master of Environmental Assessment (MEA):
Assist the Program Coordinator for MEA with responsibilities, such as matching students with faculty advisors, and coordinating with external entities on MEA internships and projects. This administrative role will come with a supplement of $1,000.
Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience
  • Candidates should have: (1) Ph.D. or Masters (MS, MR, MBA, or JD) in relevant field and at least 7 years experience relevant to land asset management of energy installation sites; (2) experience teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level or commensurate experience with professional workforce training.
Other Required Qualifications
The candidate must have:

  • A proven track record of high-quality teaching and/or training online and face to face in realms relevant to natural resource management of energy installation sites;
  • Training or experience relevant to natural resource management of energy installation sites, such as conflict management, stakeholder engagement, or environmental impact assessment;
  • Excellent problem-solving, team development, and oral and written communication skills;
  • Commitment to delivering and desire to collaborate in high quality teaching and high impact experiences to serve the mission of NC State.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with capstone courses, experiential learning, service learning, and/or other innovative pedagogy;
  • Experience or other demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality instruction and advising at the graduate level;
  • Education or experience in renewable energy technologies;
  • Skills/knowledge/experience to teach an introductory solar photovoltaics course;
  • Experience with conflict resolution, public consultation, or stakeholder engagement for land asset development and/or management of energy installation sites such as large-scale solar or wind systems;
  • Familiarity with policies and regulations relevant to natural resource management of renewable energy sites;
  • Experience with environmental impact assessment;
  • Experience with online surveys and related software such as Qualtrics;
  • At least 10 years of experience (since highest degree) in renewable energy and/or natural resource management fields.
