Job Description - Associate Engineer, Senior Associate Engineer, Lead Associate Engineer
Position Description Provide specialized and independent work in the performance of engineering studies and data evaluations. Provide a technical role in evaluating and recommending changes or additions to equipment construction and material standards. Provide support in reviewing product vendors, material specifications, and designs. Provide organization and administration of independent projects and critical standards issues for the group. Position-Related Responsibilities
- Organize and direct material evaluations including the reporting and recommendation of failed material solutions. Provide support to other technical personnel in the section in coordinating final assessment of failed construction materials.
- Independently review project progress and results using time and project management techniques. Provide support in keeping the Standards section priorities in line with the needs of T&D Operations.
- Develop or establish major project requirements for both regulated and non-regulated business activities. Provide technical support to field crews for material standards compliance, compatibility, and resolution of equipment problems.
- Provide technical evaluation of incoming material for trial inventory, and provide vendor bid evaluation, alliance review, and material specification evaluation.
- Perform budgetary and cost studies as required, including the evaluation of vendor material pricing, competing products, and historical material usage. Prepare recommendation reports supporting financial results.
- Ensure that all construction and material standards information and documentation are accurate and updated in a timely manner and provide technical assistance to personnel in the section in providing these updates.
- Provide recommendations and decisions for standards issues, and are proactive in evaluating methods to reduce costs, increase reliability, and improve safety for T&D Operations.
- Assist or lead the development, implementation and update of computer programs and databases used for standards material tracking and construction standards (CU) administration, including other supporting software and hardware requirements.
- Initiate work orders, material requisitions, and other purchasing and project tracking documentation as appropriate.
- Provide representation and/or facilitation in the Distribution Standards Committee activities, including follow up action or required updating of material and construction standards.
- Report to designated Supervisor and perform various assignments as requested.
- Responsible for OATT compliance regarding Generation and Transmission interconnection requests including SIS and facility studies
- Reports to the section Engineering Supervisor or Manager and performs other assignments as requested.
- This position may provide services to affiliates of the Company subject to the UNS Energy Code of Conduct and the related Policies and Procedures.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered) Associate Engineer Description:
- Will have primary responsibility for small and medium sized projects, and act as the project manager.
- May assist other engineers in large and complex projects.
- May be assigned to perform technical studies as needed.
- May have several projects assigned at the same time.
- Will need to have the ability to communicate effectively with personnel from Engineering, Purchasing, Materials
- Management and all areas of T&D Operations.
- Will participate in and occasionally lead team and project meetings.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- 5 years of experience as a Journeyman or experience in engineering system design, construction, maintenance, operations, or related experience.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Familiar with basic PC applications, electrical drawings, and basic electrical concepts.
- Shall have strong analytical capabilities.
- Requires guidance from a Senior Associate Engineer or other more experienced engineers.
Senior Associate Description:
- Skills of Associate and:
- Will have primary responsibility for medium to large projects and act as the project manager.
- Will assist in the training of other associate engineers and support personnel.
- Will assist in the review and revision of material and design standards.
Qualifications:
- Requires a minimum of 3 years professional experience as an Associate Engineer.
- Must be a self-starter and has developed good time management skills.
- Required to complete all or most assignments on time.
- Has developed good leadership, organization, and communication skills.
- Requires technical guidance and supervision on non-standard project assignments.
- Must be proficient with basic PC applications, and with electrical drawings and concepts.
- Understands basic TEP budgeting policies and procedures and can prioritize project assignments effectively.
- Able to provide on-call technical support on site for major equipment outages.
Lead Associate Description:
- Will have primary responsibility for projects of any size or complexity, and act as the project engineer/manager.
- Will be assigned to perform both technical and financial studies as needed.
- Will need to have the ability to communicate effectively with personnel from all areas of the company, and lead or direct team meetings and discussions independently.
- Will investigate or study new equipment developments, and actively pursue technical alternatives to engineering problems.
- Conducts engineering evaluations for technical problems by employing a broad global view of the impacts, limitations, and liability associated with the proposed results.
- Will provide technical guidance and training to other less experienced engineers/associate engineers.
- Will lead by example in effectively communicating technical ideas, providing consultation, and motivating co-workers and other team members in applying sound, logical decisions.
- Will serve as a technical lead in his/her area of expertise.
Qualifications:
- Requires a minimum of 7 years professional experience as a Senior Associate Engineer.
- Completion of technical course work in area assigned is recommended.
- Has achieved the highest level of technical skill and proficiency required of a Senior Associate Engineer with an emphasis on problem solving, work prioritization, and time management.
- Able to work independently on most projects, and only needs guidance on unusual or complex projects.
- Technical knowledge, analytical skills, and economic consideration are exhibited in all assignments.
- Has demonstrated professional leadership in working with teams, co-workers, and external company representatives.
- Demonstrates a proactive approach in increasing their knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Able to consistently adapt to new and changing policies and work practices.
- Capable of applying a diverse perspective to all technical issues and providing complete confidence in taking ownership of technical assignments.
