As a Senior Controls Engineer in Research & Development, you will play a key role in advancing innovative solutions through the application of established engineering principles and practices. This position focuses on the research, design, development, and support of specialized components, processes, and systems. Operating with moderate autonomy under the guidance of a functional manager, you will independently evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques while making thoughtful adaptations to meet project needs. Your work will span multiple areas within the R&D function, contributing to the creation and refinement of cutting-edge technologies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Applies advanced engineering and scientific principles to determine and evaluate technical feasibility for challenging projects; Solves complex customer problems using a variety of technologies.

  • Initiates and seeks input from needed resources to solve advanced technical challenges.

  • Provide technical insight to data gathering and brainstorming activities.

  • Acts as an individual contributor, core team or technical lead for a specific project.

  • Accountable for the completion of assigned deliverables in accordance with approved schedules.

  • Authors documentation and participates in activities in support of design control.

  • Independently plans, performs & prioritizes tasks that are complex in nature, in alignment with corporate goals.

  • Analyzes and interprets data, identifying trends and formulating the next steps, while effectively performing trade off analysis, if required by the function.

  • Leads, designs and/or develops one or more of the following: new test methods, specifications, technical apparatus, software and processes for complex components and functions.

  • Identifies product defects and recognizes outliers in results. Able to explain and document product defects and their impact.

  • Effectively communicates technical information to a multidisciplinary team in the form of documentation, presentations and technical summaries and promotes collaboration.

  • Technical expertise in a least (1) one area.

  • Provides technical guidance to and/or supervision of other group members and cross-functional technical teams. Able to mentor others.

  • Lead or provides technical support for Corrective Action Prevention Action (CAPA) or complaint investigations.

  • Independently generates predictable schedules for activities related to assigned projects.

  • Collaborate and work cross functional on a regular basis and as needed.

  • Contribute to a culture of innovation by proactively generating novel concepts for new products and enhancements to current product performance.

  • Ensure compliance with company quality and safety policies, procedures, and practices as well as with all local, state, federal regulations.

  • Other duties may be assigned or required for the performance of this position.

Knowledge & Experience (Minimum Job Qualifications):

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred.

  • Minimum of 5 - 7 years' experience in machine design, build, installation, and troubleshooting.

  • Proficiency with CAD software (i.e. SolidWorks, AutoCAD electrical, etc.)

  • Proficient with machine programming using ladder logic. Specifically, RS Logix 5000 and RS Logix 500.

  • Competency with the latest AB controls (plc(s) / drives). i.e. Control Logix, Compact Logix, Micro Logix, Kinetix and Powerflex drives.

  • Proficiency with AB HMI panel view design using Factory Talk View Studio.

  • Experience with SCADA and Active Plant data collection.

  • Strong knowledge of analog / digital circuit design, power distribution, and embedded systems.

  • Experience with PID tuning for components such as heaters, load cells, and E/P pneumatic valves.

  • Electrical panel design and build experience.

  • Proficient with all tools needed for panel building, machine assembly, and trouble shooting.

  • Hands on general wiring of machinery.

  • NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety Certified.

  • Ensure compliance with industry standards i.e. UL, IEC, IEEE and other regulatory requirements.

  • Experience with web converting, continuous plastic extrusion, injection molding, processing thermoplastics and thermosets preferred.
