GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Electrician I performs skilled electrical work to install, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot electrical distribution systems, fixtures, and related equipment that support University operations. This includes working with power, lighting, and control systems, as well as fire alarm, emergency, and communication circuits and ensuring all work complies with state and local electrical codes, safety standards, and University specifications. Working both independently and collaboratively, the Electrician I interprets blueprints and technical schematics, plans and lays out wiring and circuitry, and applies diagnostic testing to maintain system reliability and safety. The incumbent may inspect and monitor work performed by contractors, maintain required documentation and inventories, and provide technical guidance to other staff to ensure the efficient and compliant operation of the University's electrical infrastructure.

In carrying out these responsibilities, the incumbent follows the University's best practices to build and/or support student academic success and retention, and assist in meeting strategic objectives for persistence and timely graduation of all the student population.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Incumbents of positions at this level receive general supervision from Electricians or other employees of higher grade who provide instruction, assign work and review performance through inspection for proper completion.

DIRECT REPORTING STAFF: Incumbents of positions at this level exercise functional supervision (i.e., over certain but not all work activities, or over some or all work activities on a temporary basis) over 1-5 laborers or trades helpers, or may exercise direct supervision (i.e., not through an intermediate level supervisor) over, assign work to and review the performance of 1-5 laborers or trades helpers.

DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Inspects buildings to detect and locate causes of electrical failures or breakdowns of equipment, and determines, recommends or executes corrective measures
  • Responds to campus work requests regarding assigned work and emergencies, taking appropriate corrective actions in compliance with departmental guidelines and University and state regulations
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, specifications, operating manuals, schematic drawings, sketches, instructions or layouts in order to implement the required electrical and associated work
  • Plans and coordinates installation and wiring of equipment and fixtures such as motors and generators, switches, transformers, switchboards, and fuse boxes according to blueprints, schematic drawings and sketches
  • Tests, repairs, installs and maintains various types of electrical systems and equipment by operating the appropriate equipment and tools to ensure proper maintenance and functioning of necessary equipment
  • Repairs, maintains and operates electrical equipment (e.g., motors, generators, transformers, power panels, switchboards, regulators, wiring switches, control equipment)
  • Performs related duties such as reviewing technical literature to stay abreast of developments in the field; resetting first alarm systems; advising when to open the main electric power supply during an emergency, inspects circuits and wiring for specified shielding and grounding, inspects the operation of installed equipment or systems to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement and repairs faulty equipment or systems, as required
  • Inspects tools and equipment used in assigned work area to make repairs and/or recommend replacement
  • Provides on-the-job training and monitors progress in work performance, analyzes and resolves work problems or assists employees in solving work problems as part of the training process
  • Supervises, trains, hires, evaluates and monitors the performance of assigned staff
  • Determines on-the-job procedures changes by consulting with trades people, private utilities, outside contractors and engineers to obtain technical advice and coordinate and expedite work projects
  • Inspects the work of private contractors to ensure compliance with safety codes, specifications and regulations
  • Reads and records electric meters and maintains accurate records
  • Maintains an adequate inventory of equipment and materials


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE:



  • Knowledge of state and local electrical codes
  • Knowledge of the principles and theory of electricity
  • Knowledge of basic algebra
  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of small hand tools used in electrical practice such as pliers, screwdrivers, etc.
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of equipment including testing equipment used in electrical work
  • Knowledge of safety practices and precautions observed in the electrical trade
  • Knowledge of inspection techniques used in the electrical trade
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of hand held power tools such as drills, etc.
  • Skill in using small hand tools such as pliers, screwdrivers, etc.
  • Skill in the use of precision measuring equipment, gauges and instrumentation used in electrical work
  • Skill in using hand held power tools such as drills

QUALIFICATIONS ACQUIRED ON JOB:



  • Knowledge of laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities
  • Knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations governing public fire service communications
  • Knowledge of the principles and theory of electricity as they pertain to the installation of fixed radio transmitting and receiving equipment
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of supervision


MINIMUM ENTRANCE & LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:



  • Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Journeyman or Master Electrician's License issued by the State Examiners of Electricians
  • Possession of a current and valid driver's license and eligibility to operate a vehicle in the state of Massachusetts


REMARKS: Electricians are exposed to the hazards of high voltage; climb and work from ladders and scaffolds; may drive for job-related travel; and may work varied hours.
