GENERAL SUMMARY: Provides leadership, direction and supervision to Advanced Practice Providers within the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and provides collaborative patient management under the direction of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Medical Director. Manages Surgical APP resources and delegates tasks/responsibilities as appropriate to optimize achievement of BH Cardiothoracic Surgical team scope and objectives. Promotes retention of staff through recognition and promotion of teamwork. PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values. 2. *Practices the principal job functions of BH Cardiothoracic Surgery Advanced Practice Provider, including participation in outstate clinic/case coverage and call responsibilities. 3. *In collaboration with Cardiothoracic Surgery physicians, provides clinical oversight of the advanced practitioner team, mentoring staff to ensure compliance with procedures and protocols. 4. Serves as the liaison between the APPs and the Cardiothoracic Surgical Services Medical Director, BH Physician Executive Committee and Cardiology Service Line Director/Chief Administrative Officer. 5. *Assists the Medical Director/Physician Executive Committee/Chief Administrative Officer with special projects including, but not limited to, quality outcomes and pharmacy projects. Leads new practice initiatives such as robotics, lung nodule clinic, etc. 6. Conducts research, performs journal reviews and collaborates with appropriate departments for follow-up and outcomes measurement. Assists with pharmacy resident pilot programs including research journal reviews and follow through. 7. Liaison for device rep coordination Meets with devices reps, distributes information to surgeons and coordinates additional meetings as needed. Completes cost analysis documentation. Presents information at conferences as needed. 8. *Ensures staff members receive an orientation and ongoing educational development based upon organization and unit requirements and individualized employee needs. 9. *Conducts timely staff performance appraisals ensuring staff competence while emphasizing staff retention strategies through coaching and individual development in collaboration with the Practice Manager and Medical Director. 10. *Serves as a member of the cardiothoracic surgery team as a leader and role model for the professional development of peers, colleagues and others. 11. *Provides and/or assists with coordination of orientation activities for new advanced practitioners. 12. * Conducts and/or assists with coordination of validating and revalidation of core job competencies. 13. *Plans, coordinates and leads training and re-training sessions pulling in other resources when necessary. 14. Conducts and/or assists with certification preparation and monitoring. 15. Conducts APP time card review and approval. 16. Ensures provider resources are available and assists with provider scheduling and attendance tracking. 17. Develops and strengthens relationships with entire multidisciplinary team including other clinical APPs, medical team physicians, network providers, nursing unit managers, key decision makers, and other team members. 18. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise. 19. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned. 20. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned. (Essential Job functions are marked with an asterisk "*". Attach Addendum for positions with slightly different roles or work-specific differences as needed. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. Maintains clinical competency as required for the unit including but not limited to age-specific competencies relative to patient's growth and developmental needs, annual skill competency verification and mandatory education and competencies. 2. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions. 3. Knowledge of acute and chronic care protocols, administration of medications and delivering physical care following surgery. 4. Knowledge of patient health assessment. 5. Knowledge of common surgical and sterile techniques. 6. Skill in first-assisting and wound closure. 7. Skill in taking accurate medical histories and performing physical examination to assess medical condition. 8. Skill in identifying problems and recommending solutions. 9. Skill in providing educational instruction, training and professional guidance to others. 10. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 11. Ability to maintain quality control standards. 12. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. 13. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment relevant to changing patient needs. 14. Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures. 15. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision. 16. Ability to communicate clearly and establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public. 17. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information. 18. Ability to support and maintain quality improvement initiatives. 19. Ability to lead by example and resolve issues in a timely and professional manner. 20. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Graduate of a program for Physician Assistants that is accredited by the college of medicine and surgery and approved by the Nebraska Board of Examiners and Surgery is required. Current license as a Physician Assistant in the state of Nebraska is required. Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required. Experience in a leadership or supervisory role beneficial. OR Current Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska or approved compact state of residence as defined by the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act required. Master of Science degree in Nursing with focus in Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska required. Certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner by examination through the National Certification Corporation required. A minimum of one (1) year experience as a Nurse Practitioner preferred |
