About the Job

Position Overview

The Hmong RPA Writing System Project aims to engage the Hmong community in Minnesota to develop and/or adopt a unified standard framework of the Hmong Romanized Popular Alphabet writing system to train licensed language teachers and community instructors to preserve the Hmong language. This role will work directly with the principal investigator (Dr. Xiong) and the research team to collect, analyze, and interpret data to support the development and/or adoption of a unified standard framework of the Hmong RPA writing system. Working hours will be from 5 pm to 10 pm during the weekdays and 8 am to 4 pm on weekends.

Job Responsibilities

Function #1 (50%)

  • Transcribe interviews, focus group discussions, and community listening sessions recorded in Hmong and/or in a mixture of Hmong and English into English.

Function #2: (20%)

  • Code interview, focus group, and community listening session data with the research team.

Function #3: (10%)

  • Conduct up to 6 focus groups with various participants.

Function #4: (5%)

  • Participate in face-to-face training on semi-structural interviews, focus groups, transcription, and coding protocol.

Function #5: (5%)

  • Contact participants and set up focus groups and community listening sessions.

Function #6: (5%)

  • Administer surveys at various community listening sessions and cultural celebrations.

Function #7: (5%)

  • May be asked to draft reports or write summaries of the findings with the principal investigator and/or research team.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS or higher (willing to train the right applicant).
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to speak, read, and write in
  • Hmong, especially the Hmong RPA writing system, and English.
  • Experience working with Hmong adults and/or parents in the past.
  • Ability to travel around the Twin Cities.
  • Have access to transportation.
  • Flexible schedule.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advocating for an inclusive environment for all backgrounds and identities.

Preferred Qualification

  • MA/MS with 6-month experience in social science research.
  • Experience teaching Hmong using the Hmong RPA writing system.
  • Experience transcribing and coding qualitative data.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: The salary for this position is $22.11 per hour. Final salary offers are dependent on the candidate's experience, skills, and internal equity within the department.
