The Department of Neuroscience at UVA's School of Medicine is dedicated to gaining a better understanding of brain function in health and disease, with the ultimate goal to inform future treatment and improve quality of life. Our researchers use multi-disciplinary approaches ranging from cell biology and genetics to biophysics and immunology and their work is at the cutting edge of biomedical discovery. Examples of diseases actively researched include brain tumors, infection, hearing loss, multiple sclerosis, stroke, seizure disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, traumatic brain injury, Huntington Disease and Alzheimer's dementia. Importantly, many of our investigators are neuroimmunologists and glial biologists who take a particular interest in the interaction between neurons and immune or glial cells, respectively. Position Summary The Department of Neuroscience at the University of Virginia seeks a motivated and detail-oriented Lab Tech/Specialist to perform and assist with laboratory management and experimental procedures in Dr. Elise Cope's laboratory. The incumbent will be responsible for managing the lab's animal colony, assisting in animal experiments, conducting immunohistochemical procedures, ordering lab supplies, maintaining lab equipment, and helping to train undergraduate students. Level will be dependent on experience. Responsibilities Individual contributors who provide organizational related support or service. Spends majority of time in the delivery of support services or activities, typically under supervision. Opportunities for progression outside this career stream are typically limited without additional education or significant training and experience. Seasoned individual contributor. Works under limited supervision for routine situations. Provides assistance and training to lower level employees. Problems are typically non-routine and require analysis to understand. Makes minor adjustments to working methods and independently develops solutions to problems. Explains practices, procedures and policies to reach agreement with others outside of the Job Area. Physical Demands This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. It also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation. Position Type & Work Location
