S&ME is looking for an eager and dedicated full-time Senior Environmental Scientist to join our Environmental team in Columbia, South Carolina.

The Role:

As a Senior Environmental Scientist, you'll be at the heart of our environmental projects, handling everything from client communication and project planning to budgeting and report preparation. You'll also lead efforts to bring in new business, expanding our impact. This position will include a mix of both field and office work associated with environmental, natural resources, and hazardous building material evaluations. You'll interact with clients, contractors, regulators, local government officials, and the public to help our clients complete their projects.



  • Project Management: Lead projects independently, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and sustainable business goals. Manage small to medium-sized projects, consulting with senior staff on technical matters. Showcase strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Field Operations: Plan and execute field investigations, including drilling, sampling, data collection, natural resources assessments, and hazardous building material assessments. Lead teams during fieldwork to ensure effective environmental evaluations.
  • Technical Expertise: Emphasizing experience with Superfund and contaminated sites. Independently verify calculations, review laboratory data, and formulate recommendations.
  • Report and Proposal Preparation: Coordinate and prepare professional reports, adhering to company policies and technical best practices. Develop scope and fee proposals for small to medium projects under senior guidance.
  • Mentor & Engage: Guide junior staff, foster their development, and actively participate in industry organizations.



About You:



  • You have a Bachelor's degree in Biological or Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related technical field
  • You have a minimum of 10 years of environmental experience
  • You are 40 Hour HAZWOPER Certified
  • You have excellent project management and team leadership skills
  • You have excellent business and technical writing skills



You Are Willing and Able to:

Perform the physical demands of the position with the use of company-provided Personal Protective Equipment, such as:



  • Outdoor, hands-on work in all weather conditions
  • Traveling out-of-town (typically overnight) for assignments as necessary
  • Working outside of normal business hours when necessary
