Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of the Deputy Chief of Police is to provide crucial support to the Chief of Police in overseeing and managing all aspects of campus law enforcement and security operations.

The Deputy Chief of Police will assist with organizing, directing, and supervising the day-to-day activities of the entire police and public safety department.

Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice or equivalent with 10 years of command experience and 4 years of supervisory experience in law enforcement at the equivalent rank of Commander or Captain; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job as listed above. A Master's degree is preferred but not required.

Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or certification eligible for out of state lateral hires.

Required License or Certification
Successful candidates should have successfully graduated from a North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training course or currently hold certification as a law enforcement officer in their respective state. A continuous and uninterrupted service as a full-time sworn officer, with no more than a one-year break, is required at the time of appointment. It is important to acknowledge that North Carolina law does not acknowledge or establish a reciprocal arrangement with Federal law enforcement certification. While not a strict requirement, prior experience within higher education or as a Senior Level Police Executive in a similar sized or larger is advantageous and will be taken into consideration.
