Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
To develop and manage the comprehensive environmental health and safety program for the university through hazard identification, policy and procedure development, and implementation of programs which will minimize risk and exposure to unsafe conditions and facilities for employees, students and visitors.
Position Summary
To provide technical assistance to the Director of Environmental Health and Safety in support of the primary purpose and goals of the Environmental Health and Safety Office to include program development, conducting program audits, policy development, policy review, advising/consulting faculty and staff, implementation of behavior based safety programs. Provide guidance to Environmental Health and Safety Director with regards to all Laboratory safety related issues. Position is responsible for developing and evaluating comprehensive university wide laboratory safety program including Chemical Hygiene, Biological Safety and Radiation Safety. Position is required to act as the University Radiation Safety Officer as defined by the State of North Carolina. Position specializes in the anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of laboratory safety hazards in the university environment. Also provides technical guidance to other EH&S staff during routine and emergency situations. Position will serve as part of the UNCG Environmental Health and Safety Emergency Response Team.
35% Chemical Hygiene Oversight and Development - Develop and Implement a comprehensive Laboratory Safety Program for all research and teaching laboratories.
35% Biological Safety Officer - This position is required to act as the primary expert in the area of Biological Safety as it relates to research and teaching activities on campus.

20% Radiation Safety Officer - This position is required to be the Radiation Safety Officer registered with the State of North Carolina. Perform the duties of RSO as identified by NRC and State regulations.
5% EHS On Call Response Team Member - This position is required to be a member of the on call emergency response team for EHS. This position serves as the expert for all chemical, biological, and radiation related emergency response efforts.
5% Other duties as assigned - This position may be asked to lead special projects or assist others in the EHS Department.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or comparable background in independent academic or instructional activities, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in relatable subject field.
  • 7 years experience leading laboratory safety or related programs in a university or similar setting.
