LOCATION OF (1) POSITION(S) TO BE FILLED: DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTION, BLEDSOE COUNTY CORRECTIONAL COMPLEX, BLEDSOE COUNTY

A Motor Vehicle Records screening will be conducted prior to employment. This position requires a pre-employment drug screen.

This position requires a criminal background check. Therefore, you may be required to provide information about your criminal history in order to be considered for this position.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Possession of a master's degree from an accredited college or university in divinity, theology, or religious studies and experience equivalent to three years of full-time professional pastoral work, including at least one year in an institutional setting (e.g., correctional, mental health, military, hospital).

Substitution for the Required Master's Degree: Additional professional pastoral experience may substitute for the required graduate education on a year-for-year basis. (Two years experience is required to completely substitute for the master's degree.)

Substitution of Specialized Training for Experience: Completion of the basic level in an accredited Clinical Pastoral Education Program (i.e., CPE Basic) may substitute for one year of the required experience, there being no substitution for the required year of institutional experience.

Substitution of Education for Experience: Graduate coursework in divinity, theology, or religious studies may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years. (36 quarter hours of study equals one year of experience.)

Substitution for the Required Bachelor's Degree: Additional professional pastoral experience may substitute for the required undergraduate education on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years.

OR

Three years of full-time professional pastoral work with the State of Tennessee.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Applicant must have a current ordination or endorsement by their religious faith community.

Examination Method: Education and Experience,100%, for Preferred Service positions.

Overview

Under direction, is responsible for pastoral work of considerable difficulty and supervisory work of average difficulty; and perform related work as required. This is the highest class in the Chaplain sub-series responsible for providing pastoral services in a mental health or correctional setting. This class differs from the Psychiatric Chaplain 2 in that an incumbent of the latter directs pastoral services as the only residential chaplain in an institution, whereas the Psychiatric Chaplain 3 directs pastoral services and supervises other chaplains.

Responsibilities

  1. Models effective performance to inspire trust and success among co-workers. Mentors and trains subordinates, ensuring they are prepared for their responsibilities.
  2. Provides emotional support to offenders, clients, staff, and their families as needed, offering comfort in times of illness or personal distress.
  3. Maintains respectful and productive working relationships, resolving disputes effectively to foster a positive environment for both staff and offenders/clients.
  4. Oversees the Chaplains fund to ensure proper distribution, and monitors available resources for appropriate use in religious programs and services.
  5. Regularly evaluates the performance of subordinates and volunteers, ensuring adherence to policies and making necessary recommendations for policy changes.
  6. Processes and verifies individual and group religious accommodation requests, ensuring compliance and accuracy in documentation, while compiling reports and files.
  7. Establishes both short and long-term goals to meet the evolving needs of the facility and the religious needs of offenders/clients.
  8. Conducts orientations for volunteers and new staff, and provides training to enhance the knowledge and skills of offenders, clients, and employees.
  9. Manages the scheduling of religious activities, special events, and volunteer participation, ensuring all faith groups needs are met and tasks are prioritized appropriately.
  10. Monitors religious activities and volunteer performance, ensuring compliance with policies. Documents incidents, schedules, and maintains accurate records for both staff and offenders.
