Occupational Therapy Assistant/Academic Fieldwork Coordinator - South Campus
FUNCTION: Faculty members are expected to be effective teachers, to maintain current knowledge in their fields, and to have pedagogic skills that are appropriate for our students. While teaching is the focus, faculty members are also expected to continue development of their knowledge and skills, to contribute to the community of scholars, and to represent the College in the community. Essential Job Functions:
Teaching:
- Keeps up with developments in the field of study.
- Demonstrates high standards-academic and professional.
- Evaluates student work constructively and provides timely feedback.
- Teaches at times and locations that meet student needs.
- Provides access to students through posted conference hours, electronic communications, and other appropriate methods and responds to inquiries in a timely manner.
- Reviews, evaluates, and recommends student learning materials.
- Develops and uses a syllabus and course information materials for each course, laboratory, or clinical setting within state, college, and departmental guideline
- Maintain current knowledge of the standards of ACOTE in regards to fieldwork education as well as working relationships with fieldwork sites in community.
Professional Development:
- Maintains high standards of competence in the discipline(s) and teaching methodologies through professional development activities.
- Plans, develops, and uses effective teaching methods and materials which assist students in meeting course objectives, are appropriate for students with varied educational and experiential backgrounds and learning styles, and engage the students in learning.
- Reviews, evaluates, reflects, and revises program curricula and teaching methods through a self-evaluation process of self-reflection.
- Meets or exceeds professional standards, state-mandated guidelines, requirements of business/industry, and higher education, as appropriate to the discipline(s).
- Attends meetings held by TOTA, AOTA, or other entities that will provide valuable information regarding fieldwork education.
Service:
- Actively participates in college meetings and/or committees, task forces, and councils.
- Participates in college-related activities such as registration, community education, recruitment of students, student retention, and faculty selection.
- Participates in college activities for students/student organizations to aid in retention.
- Participates in business and community activities that foster goodwill and promote the mission and values of the college.
- Participates in activities required to maintain program and college accreditation standards.
- Promotes and maintains departmental affiliation agreements and other partnerships with other institutions.
Fieldwork Coordinator Specific:
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Be an effective teacher, maintain current knowledge in their field, and have pedagogic skills that are appropriate for our students in area of expertise.
- Plans, coordinates, facilitates, administers, and monitors fieldwork activities on behalf of the OTA program and in coordination with the program's curriculum.
- Performs responsibilities consistent with ACOTE C standards and guidelines, and institutional policy.
- Acts as an intermediary among the appropriate parties to facilitate the acquisition of fieldwork education agreements;
- Selects fieldwork education sites that demonstrate characteristics of sound patient/client management, ethical and professional behavior, and currency with practice.
- Establishes, develops, and maintains an adequate number of fieldwork sites relative to quality, quantity and broad-based learning experiences (i.e., continuum of care, across the lifespan, health care delivery systems, and community focused) to meet the educational needs of students and the program, the philosophy and outcomes of the program, and evaluative criteria.
- Facilitates assessment of the fieldwork education component (includes fieldwork sites and fieldwork educators).
- Provides ongoing communication with each fieldwork site to include:
- Fieldwork contractual agreement negotiated and maintained between the program and each fieldwork site;
- Policy and procedures of the program pertaining to fieldwork;
- Provision of dates for each fieldwork experience;
- Program requests from fieldwork sites regarding the number and type of available student clinical placements;
- Ensures that all fieldwork educators and students are in compliance with the site specific requirements for the site to which they are assigned.
- Provides program and clinical specific training to fieldwork educators, preceptors, and students.
- Provide appropriate advisement to occupational therapy assistant students in preparation for entry into the health care professional community which may include travel to clinical sites while OTA students are completing fieldwork experiences.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge, skills, and abilities relative to teaching area.
- Previous experience in fieldwork education including experience in Adult Physical Rehabilitation, Neurology, and/or Mental Health.
Education:
- Must hold a minimum of a Baccalaureate degree by an institution that is accredited by a regional or national accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE). The baccalaureate degree is not limited to a bachelor's in Occupational Therapy. However, the candidate must also have a degree in occupational therapy whether an associate's degree or bachelor degree or higher.
Experience:
- Must have a minimum of 5 years of documented experience in the field of occupational therapy, including practice as an occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant. The experience must include:
- Clinical practice as an occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant.
- Fieldwork Educator (FWE) to occupational therapy and/or occupational therapy assistant students.
- Documented certifications and/or continuing education in the specific practice areas of Adult Physical Rehabilitation, Neurology, and/or Mental Health.
Licenses/Certifications:
- Must be an Occupational Therapist or Occupational Therapy Assistant who is licensed to practice in the state of Texas.
