Position Overview

Position Summary:

Under general direction, the Access Control Technician is responsible for supporting and managing the access control systems across the ENMU-Portales campus. This critical, line-level role reports directly to the Director of the Physical Plant and plays a key part in ensuring the security and accessibility of campus facilities.

The technician will be responsible for the oversight and maintenance of access control hardware, software, and related infrastructure, and will collaborate closely with departments such as the Department of Public Safety, Planning Services, Academic Affairs, and Residence Life to ensure facilities are accessible as needed.

This position requires a minimum of 40 hours per week, typically during regular business hours. However, the technician may be required to work on-call shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, in response to emergencies or other urgent situations.


Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate and monitor computerized access control systems (software) for all proximity card readers under the care and control of the ENMU-Portales campus
  • Compile and maintain confidential employee information for access control programs.
  • Modify employee and vendor access upon request and as appropriate.
  • Issue levels of access to personnel and students as appropriate
  • Collaborate with the Department of Public Safety to assure access control procedures are consistent with best practices and the interest of public safety.
  • Generate access control reports upon request of administrative officials.
  • Support visitor management programs related to access control.
  • Process facility locking and unlocking requests from the office of Planning Services.
  • Conduct regular spot checks of software usage to identify potential abnormalities in use or access.
  • Appropriately address abnormalities related to permissions, use, or access without unnecessary delay to assist with securing facilities.
  • Coordinate with system vendors to insure proper repairs and maintenance including troubleshooting problems.
  • Provide support, as needed, to Locksmiths.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required
  • Maintain records retention requirements as necessary and where pertinent.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Job Requirements:High School diploma or equivalent certificate

  • Must successfully complete a rigid background investigation in order to work around sensitive systems (Alternative sources will be utilized).
  • Must currently reside within Roosevelt County, New Mexico or be willing to re-locate to Roosevelt County, New Mexico within six (6) moths of employment (Non-Negotiable).
  • Familiarity with operating software systems with layered users and groups.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with access control software (More specifically, Avigilon Access Control software).
  • Collegiate coursework in Internet Technology Systems (ITS) or computer literacy.
  • Previous experience with access control systems.
  • Familiarity with Locksmithing.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to learn and apply University policies, procedures and practices.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to prioritize requests and inquiries.
  • Ability to understand and properly interpret complex policies and procedures.
  • Must be tactfully assertive in responses to requests due to compliance elements of the position.
  • Position requires flexibility in working hours. This position will also be subject to call-outs while off duty.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Skill in utilizing building security and lock systems and procedures.

Working Conditions

Physical Demand and Working Conditions:

  • Work will primarily be performed in an office setting.
  • Work at times requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a consistent amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Ability to sit up to four (4) hours per day with opportunity to stand and/or walk intermittently.
  • Ability to walk up to four (4) hours per day with opportunity to sit and/or stand intermittently.
  • Ability to stand up to four (4) hours per day with opportunity to walk and/or sit intermittently.
  • Must be able to bend at waist, twist/rotate waist, crouch, climb, kneel, crawl and remain in a prone position during an emergency situation.
  • Ability to grasp and manipulate objects with hands up to all day, and perform five finger dexterity movements up to one-third of workday.
  • Hand work requires hand-eye coordination and may require bilateral coordination of hands up to one-third of workday.
  • During extenuating circumstances, the employee may be exposed to temperature extremes or humid conditions depending upon weather.
  • Employee may work alone, with or without direction, may work with one or more people, and at times may work with large groups of people.
