Position description

In direct collaboration with the Principal Investigator(s), this position will be involved in the research, testing and development of educational programing and creation of "space" in the BioInnovation Lab.

Research (85%)

Using institutional review board (IRB) approved methods and materials the candidate will participate as a member of the research team in the development, implementation, evaluation and analysis of research that investigates the educational effectiveness of novel programming and unique facilities on student development and outcomes.

In collaboration with her/his direct supervisor, the candidate will participate in the design and implementation of experiments, the gathering and analysis of data and in the preparation manuscripts for publications. Manuscript preparation by the candidate will include reviewing the relevant literature, describing results and methods used to acquire the results, presenting and analyzing data obtained by the candidate, constructing clear and informative figures, interpreting the results and discussing how they fit in the current understanding of the field.

Professional Competence (10%)

Depending on interest and availability of funds, the Junior Specialist will have opportunities to present research findings to a larger audience at scientific conferences or meetings. The candidate will also assist the investigator in presenting progress reports and final summaries to granting agencies.

University and Public Service (5%)

The Junior Specialist will participate in training activities, such as mentoring undergraduate students. They will actively contribute to lab activities via meetings and unit/campus presentations.


Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  1. Baccalaureate degree in Biomedical Engineering, Molecular Biology or related field.
  2. Experience in basic biological laboratory skills (pipetting, PCR, gel electrophoresis).
  3. Competence in basic bioinformatics tasks, such as sequence analysis, primer design for PCR and gene assembly.
  4. Experience with design, development and evaluation of new processes or devices.
  5. Understanding of the undergraduate research landscape at UC Davis.
  6. Experience with diverse microbes or experimental systems.
  7. Good quantitative skills.

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

  1. At least one year of Junior Specialist experience
