Job Summary

Supervises staff involved in providing clinical patient care. Assists in ensuring the quality of patient care delivery in a specific patient care area and serves as a role model for professional nursing practice. Assists with the administration and management of personnel, fiscal, and material resources. May assume full responsibility for the unit in delegated areas and in the absence of the manager.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $221,500 - $241,800 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

UCSF Health St. Mary's Hospital has cared for the people of the San Francisco Bay Area since 1857, when it was founded by eight Sisters of Mercy from Ireland. We are an accredited, not-for-profit hospital located across the street from Golden Gate Park. As a full-service facility, we're home to the nation's first digital cardiac catheterization laboratory, innovative orthopedic and spine care, a state-of-the-art cancer center, and comprehensive rehabilitation programs. UCSF Health Saint Francis Hospital is an accredited, not-for-profit community hospital that has been providing exceptional health care in San Francisco for more than 100 years. As San Francisco's only downtown hospital, Saint Francis is uniquely situated to care for international and domestic visitors, as well as the residents that make up San Francisco's diverse population. Located atop Nob Hill, Saint Francis is home to the Bothin Burn Center (the largest burn center in Northern California), the Saint Francis Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Insititute, and the Gender Institute among many other helpful services.

Required Qualifications


  • Demonstrated skills to effectively supervise clinicians and to manage the complex workflow and multiple priorities involved with a patient care unit.
  • In depth knowledge of patient care clinical standards and care delivery, systems, external regulations and internal policies.
  • Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document human resources matters and employee performance. Provides input to decision-makers on human resources matters.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective information exchange and problem solving with all levels of management and staff, consultants and outside agencies.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to train and mentor subordinates, to convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner. Prepares and presents a variety of reports, documentation, analyses, and project proposals.
  • Knowledge of business software and specialized applications and data management systems used in nursing units or departments.
  • 2 years of leadership or supervisory experience
  • 3 years of experience in an acute care hospital setting.

Preferred Qualifications


  • 1 year of critical care experience

License/Certification

Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required.Preferred
Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California Required
Active American Heart Association CPR Certification Required
Active American Heart ACLS Certification Required
Active American Heart PALS Certification Preferred
CCRN Preferred
NIHSS Preferred
