Network Engineer, Wired
Job Summary The Network Engineer, Wired will play a crucial role in the Network Services team within Infrastructure Services to support the design, implementation, optimization, administration, and technical documentation of all wired network infrastructure. The Network Engineer, Wired will work to ensure the reliability, availability, and scalability of all wired network solutions. The Network Engineer, Wired will participate in the resolution of complex technical issues in a timely manner while delivering best-in-class wired service support across UCSF. This role will conduct day-to-day network engineering and technical support for wired network infrastructure to ensure that systems are operating at peak efficiency with little to no downtime.
The Network Engineer, Wired will positively impact UCSF's operations and culture by ensuring UCSF's IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of UCSF's academic mission. This team member will advance UCSF's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across stakeholders. This role will execute the University's vision while modeling UCSF's culture and values. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $136,000 - $204,000 (Annual Rate). The Network Services team within Infrastructure Services holds a critical role in managing, maintaining, and developing the company's computer network infrastructure, particularly ensuring reliable technical accessibility for individuals engaged in vital medical and health research work. Their core responsibilities include providing secure internet and network services, managing IT services, and maintaining data systems. They support end-users, manage system updates, repairs, and connectivity issues, and play an essential role in troubleshooting network issues, optimizing performance, and implementing protocols. They also oversee software and hardware updates, and manage data storage, disaster recovery, and network resilience. Beyond this, Network Services provides specialized technical support to other employees in the organization, with a focus on those involved in medical and health research.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent combination of experience/training, in one or more of the following fields: computer science, engineering, information systems, etc.
- 5-7 years of experience working in one or more of the following fields: network services or network operations.
- Extensive experience in network engineering or wired network infrastructure administration.
- Advanced knowledge of enterprise networking technologies, tools and processes, including routing and switching, L4-7 traffic management (load balancing), data-center fabric, VoIP virtualization, and hybrid cloud. Proficiency with Cisco, Juniper, Aruba switching/routing.
- Experience with LAN, WAN, VPN and network security technologies: IPSec, SSL, firewall rules. Understanding of network protocols critical to design and operation of complex modern enterprise TCP/IP networks using standards and technologies including but not limited to: MPLS, OSPF, BGP, EIGRP, STP, 802.1Q, Multicast, VRF-lite, QoS, and IPSec.
- Experience with STP, 802.1X, LACP, LAG, VXLAN. Proficient with DNS, DHCP, IPAM;, experience with L1 technologies (SMF, MMF, DWDM, Transceivers, AOC, Twinax, Fiber fan-outs). Experience with network traffic analysis for troubleshooting (tcpdump, Wireshark, Netflow/sFlow, iperf).
- Demonstrated experience with L3 protocols and techniques, BGP, MPLS, OSPF, EIGRP, VXLAN routing, VRFs, VRRP, or similar. Experience with Traffic Engineering, QoS, NAT, TCP/IP, Multicast, IPv6. Experience deploying Cisco , Aruba Juniper Routers and Switches including Cisco Nexus switches in a datacenter environment.
- Familiarity with hosted environments: AWS, OCI, GCP, Azure. Implement cloud connectivity solutions using AWS Direct Connect, Google Cloud Interconnect, Azure Express Route.
- Knowledge of network security best practices, and technologies such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, virtual private networks. Familiarity with compliance standards and frameworks relevant to network security: ISO 27001, NIST, GDPR.
- Extensive experience with network management and monitoring tools (Datadog, SolarWinds, Nagios, Wireshark). Experience working with ISP/telco providers on configuration and support to resolve latency and bandwidth issues.
- Ability to analyze, diagnose, troubleshoot complex network systems to identify issues and inefficiencies. Ability to implement detailed network designs in real-world environment. Experience troubleshooting and deploying solutions involving certificates and public key infrastructures: 802.1x or SSL decryption and offloading.
- Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations related to IT systems, privacy laws, safety standards, service level agreement adherence. Familiarity with DR principles related to network infrastructure. Ability to support the design and implementation of effective business continuity strategies for network operations.
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate with customers, understand their needs, provide support and guidance with professionalism.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to communicate technical information and ideas to a diverse community of colleagues and stakeholders.

- Advanced organizational skills and ability to balance competing priorities and support concurrent projects. Experience working in operational and project-based environments using leading project management practices: schedule management, status reporting, communication of project risks and issues.
- Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills; scopes solutions based on knowledge of available resources and timelines. Able to ask questions, gather information, evaluate options, make decisions with integrity.
Preferred Qualifications
- 7+ years experience working in one or more of the following fields: network services, field services, information technology or network operations.
- Experience with programming/scripting languages used to automate networks (Python, Ansible).
- Certifications
- CompTIA Network+ Certification or Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
- Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) or Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE)
- Aruba Certified Switching Associate (ACSA) or Aruba Certified Switching Professional (ACSP) equivalent
- Aruba ACA or ACP or equivalent
- ITIL V4
