SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal ofenabling human life on Mars.

MECHANICAL ENGINEER, SENSORS (STARSHIP AVIONICS)

The Sensor Development team designs, builds, and tests innovative sensing solutions that are critical to making life on Mars possible. The Sensor Mechanical Design Engineer will work on this highly interdisciplinary team of engineers to design the mechanical aspects of sensors, conduct mechanical analysis across environments, and complete testing.

Primary responsibilities include designing the mechanical aspects of the sensor and packaging to survive launch and space environments. Responsibilities will also include mechanical analysis and sensor testing.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop innovative sensor designs and/or packages for physical sensors such as pressure, acceleration, flow, etc.
  • Build analytical and finite element thermal, structural, and fatigue models
  • Create 3D models, production 2D drawings, and complete tolerance analysis
  • Complete failure analysis of components as it relates to thermal loads, vibration, and shock
  • Interface with vendors and production teams to ensure designs can be manufactured at high volumes

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering
  • Hands-on experience working with sensors, such as accelerometers, pressure sensors, strain gauges, or temperature sensors, etc.
  • Hardware design experience

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 3+ years of experience in the design of sensors or optical systems, packaging or integration of sensors, or the design of mechanical and electrical systems
  • Working knowledge of fundamental sensing mechanisms
  • Experience packaging PCBs
  • Exposure to high volume manufacturing with a focus on design for manufacturability
  • Manufacturing processes including welding, wire bonding, and semiconductor fabrication
  • Experience designing components for high temperature, high vibration environments
  • Experience with thermal and structural FEA
  • Knowledge of inspection processes and tools for mechanical components

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Extended hours and weekend work may be required to support critical project and mission milestones

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay range:
Mechanical Engineer/Level I: $95,000.00 - $115,000.00/per year
Mechanical Engineer/Level II: $110,000.00 - $130,000.00/per year
