Key Responsibilities

First shift position, part-time position, assigned to a mentor for the extent of the program; who will train and develop the individual's skills to become proficient in the following areas:


Duties may include all or a portion of the following:



  • Operate manual and semi-automatic welding equipment to weld a variety of parts including steel plate, angles, bushings, shafts, hardware, sheet meal of various gauges to produce assemblies or sub-assemblies.
  • Select the correct welding method such as MIG or pulse welding to perform vertical down, horizontal, circular, and overhead welds using various welding techniques necessary to prevent excessive distortion and avoid burn through.
  • Select the correct voltage and current based on material type and thickness to be able to apply the appropriate weld size based off engineering instructions.
  • Able to read and understand blueprints and technical drawings to appropriately position parts in fixtures and secure to ensure proper alignment during the welding process.
  • Inspect welds and identify any defects or issues, this includes checking for proper penetration, alignment, and overall quality of the welds.
  • Properly set up an oxy-acetylene torch and or plasma cutter to perform cutting operations. Also be able to use various tools such as grinders, sanders, drills, impacts, hammers and rivet guns.
  • Adhere to safety procedures including wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) required for welding.
  • Perform data entries using various computer programs to log work order completions and other job-related activities.
  • Maintain equipment by performing various inspections to ensure it operates efficiently and safely, including keeping your work area clean and free of hazards.


Preferred Qualifications

Must be a high-school student within the Career Pathways Institute of Grand Island Public Schools in the Industrial Technology Academy, current student at Grand Island Northwest studying welding or current student at St. Paul school studying welding.



Or



Must be a current Central Community College Student studying welding.

Compensation Data

Starting rate is $20/hour for Highschool apprentice & $24.12/hour for CCC apprentice.
