Department: Schar School Policy and Government

Classification: Adjunct Faculty (matrix)

Job Category: Adjunct Faculty

Location: Arlington, VA

Workplace Type: On Site Required

Salary: Salary commensurate with education and experience

Criminal Background Check: Yes

About the Department:

The Schar School of Policy and Government provides undergraduate and graduate students the skills, knowledge, and analytic abilities to be leaders and managers in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors.

About the Position:

The Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University is seeking an adjunct instructor to teach Administration in Public and Nonprofit Organizations, a foundational course in the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program.

This graduate-level course introduces the field of Public Administration and its intellectual foundations. Designed as a broad survey course, it emphasizes breadth over depth, with many topics explored in greater detail in other required or elective courses. In addition to introducing students to key literature and building a foundational knowledge base, the course develops essential professional skills aligned with MPA program goals, including analytic, writing, verbal, group, and presentation skills.

Adjunct faculty are hired on a part-time, semester-by-semester basis, contingent upon program needs and student demand.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach MPA courses at various times and locations;
  • Develop and deliver engaging lessons that encourage active student participation and practical application of course material;
  • Submit required university reports and forms in a timely manner;
  • Prepare and use a course syllabus for each class, following institutional guidelines;
  • Provide academic support to students through meetings before or after class, by appointment, electronic communication, or other appropriate methods;
  • Assess student performance, measure progress toward course objectives, and provide timely feedback;
  • Maintain professional and collegial relationships with students, faculty, and the community; and
  • Participate in required meetings, trainings, and orientations.

Instructions to Applicants:

For full consideration, applicants must apply for Adjunct Faculty (matrix) at https://jobs.gmu.edu/. Complete and submit the online application to include three professional references with contact information, and provide a CV and cover letter for review.
