Job Family Description

Engineering roles perform engineering work in operations, production, construction, or maintenance environments. They may design and scale up manufacturing processes, instruments and equipment and tests manufactured products to maintain quality. They may plan, design, and estimate time and cost and oversees construction and maintenance of structures, facilities, systems, and components. They analyze and develop solutions to engineering problems related to manufacturing equipment and systems or the causes of component failures. They develop and apply engineering standards and procedures and provide advice on issues within the engineering field.

Discipline Description

Civil/Structural/Architect (C/S/A) Engineers provide engineering support for civil and structural installations and systems (e.g., roads, bridges, dams, building structures, stacks etc.) in an operating nuclear materials processing plant or as part of the broader site infrastructure. They identify system concepts and determine system functional and technical requirements, develop, and analyze equipment performance, monitor system performance, troubleshoot, and resolve problems and ensure operation within technical, regulatory and safety basis requirements. They propose and develop process/system improvements including equipment upgrades, and plant modifications.

Geotechnical engineers ensure the safety and sturdiness of foundations for streets, buildings, and other structures and systems. They focus on how these manmade objects interact with the earth, including soil and rock.

Structural engineers design and assess major projects, such as buildings, bridges, and dams, to ensure their strength and durability. They provide design and construction oversight of structural engineering tasks.

Some Typical Duties & Responsibilities Include:

SRNS is seeking to hire an experienced Geotechnical Engineer in our C/S/A-Structural Mechanical-Geotechnical Engineering group. This position will be expected to perform activities related to geotechnical engineering in support of various Savannah River Site (SRS) operating areas, as well as other areas where geotechnical design evaluation is required. These activities include, but are not limited to:
* Providing geotechnical investigation, direction, coordination of project geotechnical design needs, and status of investigations.
* Providing facility-specific site characterization and soil property design parameters for structures and foundations.
* Assuring that geotechnical engineering project activities are conducted in compliance with SRS directives, policies, standards, and procedures.
* Requires frequent and effective interface with project engineering and management teams, the Department of Energy, and the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board.
* Expected to be an expert in the field and speak authoritatively on geotechnical engineering issues related to SRS.

Required Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, or architecture relevant field plus at least fifteen years of experience (YOE), OR Master's degree in relevant field plus at least twelve years of experience (YOE), OR Doctoral degree in relevant field plus at least eight years of experience (YOE)
-Must have extensive experience in Geotechnical Characterization and Analysis.
-Must be able to walk down systems in the field.
-Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance, if required.

We'd Also Like to See

- PhD Degree and Professional Registration in Geotechnical or Civil Engineering, preferred.
-Geologic knowledge, seismology/earthquake ground response, and knowledge/experience of soil conditions and issues at SRS (liquefaction, "soft zones", etc.)
-Numerical modeling (FLAC, PLAXIS, etc.) experience
Good communication skills.
-Experience in communication/ coordination with outside agencies including universities.
-Experience in work planning and scheduling, manpower forecasting, and budget management
-Experience in development and deployment of field surveillance programs

Security Clearance Information
