Sabathani Community Center (SCC) is one of Minnesota's oldest African American-founded nonprofits & serves a multi-cultural community of more than 50,000 community members in South Minneapolis. SCC was founded in 1966 by a handful of concerned community members seeking to address social and economic disparities in underserved communities in the areas of youth programming, housing, health and education. Wages & Benefits

$20 per hour; generous paid time off (PTO), plus 11 paid holidays and two floating holidays. SCC sponsors a retirement plan with 4% employer match and immediate vesting.

A Typical Day in the Life...

Sabathani Community Center (SCC) programs serve the South Minneapolis community with basic needs for families and seniors. Sabathani leverages resources with nonprofits and small businesses in its building to serve the community. This position reports to the Director of Family Resources and will be part of a team that maintains the day-to-day food shelf operations. Responsibilities will include the following:



  • Greet volunteers and clients politely and warmly, and assist volunteers in carrying out the daily operations of the Food Distribution program.
  • Assist in collecting donations dropped off for the food shelf and clothing closet.
  • Support the Food Distribution team in ensuring the food shelf remains physically attractive and always operates according to established guidelines and health codes.
  • Move large volumes of food, typically 10 to 15 pallets per delivery, from delivery trucks to appropriate storage locations quickly and efficiently.
  • Help maintain a clean and sanitary environment in all work areas.
  • Maintain organization and cleanliness of the food shelf, including emptying garbage, sweeping, and mopping floors.


Who You Are



  • You have demonstrated experience working with diverse and/or underrepresented populations.
  • You can follow verbal and written instructions, read and write effectively, and you're able to understand and follow safety procedures.
  • You demonstrate a high degree of professionalism in your communication, attitude, and teamwork with food shelf clients, staff, and management.
  • You can lift and move heavy objects (at least 40 pounds), and you can frequently bend, twist, and turn throughout the day.
  • You can follow food shelf policies and procedures.
  • You can stand and walk frequently, for three to six hours per shift.
  • You can apply reasonable judgment when assisting visitors, food shelf clients, and volunteers, as well as when answering questions.
  • You have a valid driver's license, access to reliable transportation, and the ability to meet Sabathani's driving record requirements. Please note that if the license was not issued in the state of Minnesota, you have 60 days after becoming a Minnesota resident in which to apply for your Minnesota driver's license or permit.
