Job Summary

The Principal Polysomnography Technologist is responsible for performing routine and complex diagnostic and therapeutic polysomnographic procedures on hospital inpatients and outpatients across the age spectrum. These procedures include, but are not limited to, in-lab polysomnograms (diagnostic and PAP titrations), home sleep apnea testing, MSLT, staging and scoring, oxygen administration, CO monitoring, PAP mask fittings, and patient education.

This role acts as a liaison for interdepartmental issues and supports both new hires and experienced technologists. The Principal Technologist leads or participates in daily huddles, assists with scoring, triages referrals in coordination with the Medical Director, ensures balanced patient workloads, and coordinates patient care within the shared lab space.

The Principal Polysomnography Technologist is also responsible for monitoring the technical quality of studies performed by all classifications of Polysomnography Technologists and Respiratory Therapists. They maintain, organize, and inventory supplies and equipment, ensuring compliance with Joint Commission standards.

Additional responsibilities include performing routine audits (daily/weekly/monthly) of various logbooks and databases, overseeing and monitoring reading assignments to Sleep Medicine physicians, and supporting research and quality assurance efforts to meet accreditation standards, as directed by the Sleep Lab Medical Director.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload a license and/or certification if required for the position

  • Registered Polysomnograph Tech (RPSGT)
  • American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR
  • Licensed by the Medical Board of California as a Polysomnographic Technologist, OR must be in progress (documentation will be requested) and current by time of hire
  • Experience as Polysomnographic Technologist
  • Develop a working knowledge of the current database to accurately maintain the clinical database and archive digital studies to storage media
  • Interpersonal communication skills to interact with tact and diplomacy with hospital and clinic patients, physicians, and staff at all levels
  • Ability to engage in collaborative problem solving with coworkers and staff
  • Must have the ability to function as a "team player," being considerate and exible, considering the needs of your peers
  • Ability to exercise discretion to ensure that patient condentiality is maintained, and a professional, respectful hospital, clinic, or laboratory environment exists at all times
  • Ability to maintain composure, eciency, and a positive, customer-service oriented manner during periods of peak workload, with frequent interruptions, under tight deadlines, and when interacting with patients who are ill, angry, or emotionally distressed
  • Accomplish a variety of concurrent assignments in an effective and ecient manner. Organizes and prioritizes assignments to complete work in a timely and ecient manner, particularly when there are changes in workload or assignments
  • Remains exible and adaptable to changes in policies and procedures
  • Written and oral communication skills to provide information, explanations, and instructions to, and to elicit information from others with varying levels of ability to understand, including individuals who are ill or distressed, or for whom English may be a second language
  • Filing skills to maintain physical and digital logs and les of information in alphabetical, chronological, and/ or numerical order, such that it is current and easily retrievable

Preferred Qualifications

  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist in an AASM-accredited Sleep Disorders Center
  • Experience working with Adults and Pediatric patients of all ages
  • Experience with Home Sleep Study patients
  • Training new staff and/or less experienced technologists

Department Overview

The Clinical Neurophysiology Department at UC Davis Medical Center encompasses four specialized units: EEG, Sleep, EMG, and the EEG/EMU Hospital Departments. Each unit operates under the leadership of the Neurodiagnostic Services Director, in collaboration with the Medical Director. The Principal Polysomnography Technologist reports directly to the Neurodiagnostic Supervisors.

The Sleep Lab provides a full range of routine and complex diagnostic and therapeutic polysomnographic procedures for hospital inpatients and outpatients across all age groups. These procedures include, but are not limited to, in-lab polysomnograms (diagnostic and PAP titrations), home sleep apnea testing, staging and scoring, oxygen administration, CO monitoring, PAP mask fittings, and patient education.

Work Environment
