DESCRIPTION:
The Lead Designer independently develops design approaches and concepts, project layouts, and contract documents in accordance with company design standards and client requirements. Provides technical supervision to the design team assigned to the same projects and across all disciplines. Regularly interfaces with the client, project manager, and design team and holds other project supervision responsibilities as required. Lead Designer holds responsible charge for assigned projects.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Begins assuming responsibility for project designs under the supervision of the Engineer of Record (EOR) and/or Project Manager and within the Designer's control and expertise
* Responsible to develop design approaches and concepts for projects with conceptual input and oversight from EOR
* Oversees and may assist in preparation of drawings and holds responsibility for the accuracy and neatness of work
* Attends in-house project kick-off meetings and design meetings
* Performs specific engineering studies and other design analyses using industry software
* Responsible to perform studies, load calculations, and selection of equipment appropriate to the project design
* Assists or leads the development of the overall designer man-hour budget and is responsible for the man-hour budget within the discipline; develops work plans for discipline team in accordance with the budget
* Provides input, feedback, and updates on project schedules and plans work in accordance with the schedule
* Responsible for coordinating equipment and overall design space requirements with the design team
* Communicates design requirements and answers questions from contractors and suppliers during the bid or construction phases
* Maintains detailed records of communications with clients, contractors, vendors, and team members
* Conducts project job site visits during construction to monitor progress and observe installed construction and comments based on design specifications, owner expectations and building codes
* Coordinates with local authorities, utilities, and municipalities to incorporate associated construction, code, and government requirements
* Evaluates the work of design colleagues and provides feedback and/or corrections
* Assists in training, mentoring, and/or developmental guidance of designers and EITs
* Provides input during employee reviews
* Maintains a continued focus on keeping up with code requirements, design software, and other industry trends
* May collaborate with a team of designers and engineers on the standardization of design practices and procedures, QA/QC, and current issues facing the design group

* Demonstrated proficient knowledge of AutoCAD, MicroStation, Revit, Navisworks, and discipline specific engineering software (i.e., TRACE, HASS, and SKM)
* Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
* Thorough Knowledge of applicable engineering disciplines
* Knowledge of engineering theories and methodologies
* Knowledge of state and/or local construction guidelines
* Knowledge of applicable codes and standards
* Knowledge of construction processes and terminology

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
* Two-year technical degree in an applicable discipline plus 10 years applicable experience OR 12 years of practical design experience
* Eight years of experience with large scope projects
* Experience in performing system or project designs with little to no technical supervision from engineering staff
* Capable of reading and interpreting plans from other disciplines (i.e., architectural, structural, plumbing, electrical, mechanical)
