Job Summary

Reporting to the Associate Chair of Administration and Finance/Chief Administrative Officer, the Director of Administration is responsible for the comprehensive administrative management of the Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) at UCSF.

This role involves strategizing, developing, and implementing administrative structures and funding streams to support the department's mission and operations. The Director will work closely with Health System leadership to integrate clinical services with the university's goals of teaching, research, and public service. As a key member of the DFCM Executive Council, the Director will engage in strategic planning and oversight to enhance departmental operations.

The Director will oversee the management of departmental space and provide effective support for contracts, and grants, ensuring compliance with research programs. They will also ensure the provision of exceptional administrative and human resources management across the department. The position requires optimizing resource utilization and establishing efficient administrative systems and processes.

In partnership with the department's finance and research administration teams, the Director will provide fiscal oversight and management, ensuring adherence to university policies. They will monitor revenue streams and expenditures, offering strategic guidance to division chiefs, and maintain strong internal controls and streamlined business processes.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $143,900 - $215,800 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Family & Community Medicine (DFCM) is engaged in research, teaching, training, service and clinical activities located at seven primary UCSF and leased sites in San Francisco (Parnassus, ZSFG - Buildings 80, 90, 20 and the Main Hospital, Mission Center Building, Laurel Heights, Mission Hall, Lakeshore, Lakeside) as well as the OSHER center, Women's Health and the UCSF Primary Care Practices at China Basin and Laurel Village and at various local community, national and international research/service/education training and clinical sites. In addition to the Department's Family Medicine Residency Program located at ZSFG, the Department has affiliated residency programs in Fresno, Salinas, Santa Rosa, Kaiser Vallejo, Santa Rosa, and Contra Costa Health Systems. Authority and accountability for the Department reside with the Department Chair who delegates authority to Vice Chairs, the Executive Council, Directors and Chiefs of Service and their Administrators and the Department Associate Chair of Administration and Finance.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Minimum 6 years of related experience
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a lead/supervisor/manager.
  • Broad knowledge of the organization's processes, protocols and procedures with a focus on budget, account and fund management and / or personnel management under labor contract(s) and personnel policy.
  • Broad knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; and / or accounting and payroll.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to influence / persuade all levels of staff.
  • Skills in organization and customer service to effectively manage multiple important priorities. Proven ability to organize department work functions in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Broad knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Skills to work collaboratively with other locations.
  • Proven skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution.
  • Demonstrated management and conflict resolution skills to effectively lead and motivate others.
  • Excellent project management skills, including the capability of managing multi-year projects.
  • Very strong ability to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's degree in related area and /or equivalent experience / training.
  • Clinical Finance/Clinical practice experience along with experienced knowledge working with tableau dashboards.
