Job Summary

The Veteran Benefit Enrollment Coordinator I plays a vital role in supporting the Assistant Director of Veteran Benefits to provide exceptional customer service to student Veterans and their dependents who are utilizing Veteran Affairs (VA) Education Benefits. This position is responsible for assisting in the veteran certification process, supporting the knowledge of enrollment and registration procedures, and troubleshooting student enrollment records and payments. The Coordinator assists with the daily operations of the office and works to enhance co-curricular learning experiences for military-affiliated students. As a School Certifying Official (SCO), the Veteran Benefit Enrollment Coordinator ensures accurate certification and compliance with VA education benefits, as well as institutional policies. This position provides comprehensive support, guidance, and advocacy to military-affiliated students, assisting them in navigating the complexities of VA benefits and enrollment processes. The Coordinator collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to promote student success, ensure timely reporting, maintain compliance, and support veteran engagement initiatives at FGCU to help foster a positive, supportive environment for the military community on campus.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Supports the Assistant Director of Veteran Benefits in monitoring VA education records, including degree/major, registration, schedules, and tuition changes, to ensure timely certification and continued student eligibility.
  • Serves as a School Certifying Official (SCO), accurately certifying student enrollment and eligibility for VA benefits, advising on eligibility, options, and processes.
  • Implements federal and state veterans' education benefit programs, ensuring compliance and preventing financial or legal liabilities for students and the university.
  • Collaborates with the Bursar's Office to verify VA Education benefit payments, resolve discrepancies, and ensure adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Maintains accurate, audit-ready records in compliance with VA, federal, state, and university regulations, completing ongoing VA-mandated training.
  • Provides one-on-one advising to student veterans and dependents on VA benefits, tuition assistance, financial aid, and enrollment processes, ensuring exceptional customer service.
  • Continuously assesses and improves service delivery processes to enhance efficiency, compliance, and student satisfaction.
  • Assists with maintaining the university's Purple Star designation and fulfilling federal reporting obligations related to military-connected students.
  • Represents VA Education Benefits and Enrollment Management in campus and community meetings, staying current on VA regulations and applying updates to certification processes.
  • Collaborates with internal departments to provide streamlined support for military-affiliated students, and maintain strong relationships with VA regional offices and relevant agencies.
  • Responsible for the management and oversight of certification processes to maintain funding and prevent negative student impact and loss of funding.
  • Offers exceptional customer service, addressing complex questions and guiding students through benefit-related procedures with empathy and accuracy.
  • Supports the Military & Veteran Success (MVS) office in promoting a veteran-friendly space that fosters peer engagement, community, and academic success.

Other Duties:

  • Supports military-affiliated students' transition, retention, and academic success through outreach initiatives, financial resources, and peer support programs like PATH and Purple-Star Professional Development Training.
  • Represents the department and VA education benefits at on- and off-campus events, including orientations, recruiting activities, and veteran-related events.
  • Develops and delivers educational programs, workshops, and initiatives to inform students, faculty, and staff about military benefits and support services.
  • Collaborates with University Advancement on philanthropic opportunities, serve on committees and advisory boards, and engage in professional development to stay informed on compliance and best practices.
  • Participates in evening or weekend programming or events, such as Eagle Expo, Say Yes to the Nest, or community events, providing benefit-related information to meet the needs of prospective military-affiliated students and families.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications for a Veteran Benefit Enrollment Coordinator I:

  • This position requires either six years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
  • VA Certification or ability to obtain 30 days after hire.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.

Required Qualifications for a Veteran Benefit Enrollment Coordinator II:

  • This position requires either eight years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
  • VA Certification or ability to obtain 30 days after hire.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and institutional regulations governing veterans' benefits and financial aid compliance.
  • Knowledge of higher education enrollment processes, academic policies, and financial aid operations.
  • Knowledge of military culture and the unique challenges faced by veterans and military-affiliated students in higher education.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data entry, records maintenance, and reporting.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in using student information systems (e.g., Banner), Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint), and VA-specific platforms.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple time-sensitive tasks in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive student information.
  • Ability to work independently to complete assignments as well as part of a collaborative team.
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex policies and procedures from multiple agencies (VA, Department of Education, FGCU, etc.).
  • Ability to represent the department and university professionally during events, presentations, and community outreach.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
