SUMMARY: The Director of Technology Solutioning and Engineering (TSE) is a senior technology leadership role reporting to the Chief Information Officer (CIO) within the Technology & Innovation Division at BankUnited. This position is responsible for leading the technology solutioning engineering efforts within the organization, including ideation, design and change and/or integration into the company's technology stack, ensuring the alignment of technology strategies with business goals, while building technology solutions. This role will focus on enabling innovation and the utilization of emerging technologies, overseeing the development and implementation of technology solutions, and managing the engineering teams to deliver high-quality products and services. The TSE Director leads a multidisciplinary team of ~50 professionals across six technological functions, playing a pivotal role in architecting, engineering, and integrating scalable, secure, and cloud-first solutions that support the bank's business strategy. This leader will ensure the consistent delivery of enterprise-grade platforms, modernize the bank's technology stack, and enable secure, data-informed digital innovation while maintaining active interaction with operational areas within the company, understanding and enabling their technological needs. The TSE will oversee a team responsible for researching, recommending and evolving the Bank's Cloud First strategy. The function will manage the development, implementation, support, optimization, and monitoring of key functional areas, including cloud systems architecture, design, integration, migration, and SLA/reporting metrics. The function will be responsible for envisioning, designing, and implementing plans for cloud architecture to ensure the appropriate capacity, capabilities, and infrastructure are available to support the bank's initiatives and day-to-day technology requirements
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties and special projects may be assigned.

  • Strategic Technology Leadership:
  • Defines and implements a cohesive engineering and architecture strategy that aligns with the bank's digital transformation, security, and regulatory priorities. Serves as a strategic advisor to the CIO and the company's senior leadership on technology enablement, cloud modernization, integration strategy, and enterprise architecture. Translates business goals into executable technology roadmaps across multiple domains.
  • Functional Oversight - Provides executive direction and leadership over the following departments:
  • Software Engineering & Systems Integration: Drives delivery of scalable, reliable solutions that enable seamless data flow between vendor systems and internal platforms.
  • Technology Enterprise Architecture: Defines architectural standards, governance processes, and reference models that ensure alignment with business and compliance needs. Promotes reusability, modularity, and interoperability of solutions across lines of business.
  • Cloud Architecture & Engineering: Leads the evolution of the bank's cloud ecosystem under the Cloud First strategy. Ensures secure, high-performance, and cost-effective cloud adoption with automation and Infrastructure-as-Code principles.
  • Technology Security Engineering: Embeds security architecture and engineering best practices across all technology initiatives in partnership with Cybersecurity and Risk Management teams. Supports proactive defense-in-depth engineering and secure-by-design methodologies.
  • Data Strategy & Governance: Drives enterprise data governance, platform architecture, data quality standards, and enablement of advanced analytics in alignment with compliance mandates.
  • Technology Planning: Oversees technical planning and technology portfolio management, ensuring alignment with business priorities and efficient use of capital and operating budgets.
  • Execution & Governance:
  • Leads strategic technology projects and cross-functional initiatives with high impact and visibility. Establishes and enforces engineering standards, architecture review boards, and delivery frameworks. Ensures all systems and processes meet or exceed regulatory and internal risk/compliance standards (FFIEC, GLBA, SOX, etc.).
  • Leadership & Talent Development:
  • Inspires, develops, and retains a high-performing team of architects and engineers across multiple disciplines. Fosters a culture of collaboration, innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement. Mentor senior leaders and support succession planning and career development.
  • Defines the technology strategy, vision, and roadmap in alignment with the organization's digital business strategy.
  • Proposes and contributes to technology investment decisions, managing technology vendors, and supporting the CIO in working with business executives to identify and roadmap new business models and capabilities.
  • Manages funding for innovation-driven technology investments, translating customer and market requirements into digital products and services, and determining how mainstream and emerging technologies can advance business strategy.
  • Serves as the central point for technological innovation within IT, leads a team to drive Agile and DevOps adoption, and supports the CIO in making key technology investment decisions.
  • Pilots and builds digital business platforms, modernizing infrastructure, optimizing business operations, collaborating with product and engineering teams on new product development, and ensuring risk assessments for new technologies.
  • Maintains IT operations, developing the vision and roadmap for company goals, driving procurement of technology, providing architectural direction for cloud-based and on-premises solutions, managing cloud usage and costs, and contributing to the development of emerging technologies and cloud standards.
  • Focuses on planning and building IT infrastructure, operations, and services, and supporting other innovative efforts throughout the business.
  • Adheres to and complies with applicable, federal and state laws, regulations and guidance, including those related to anti-money laundering (i.e. Bank Secrecy Act, US PATRIOT Act, etc.).
  • Adheres to Bank policies and procedures and completes required training.
  • Identifies and reports suspicious activity.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises function, projects or services and/or one or more employees, as applicable.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance coaching; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION
Bachelor's Degree in computer science, engineering, or related field.
Master's Degree preferred
EXPERIENCE

  • 15+ years of experience in enterprise IT
  • At least 7+ years in senior leadership roles overseeing architecture and engineering teams
  • Proven experience leading cloud architecture (AWS or Azure preferred), systems integration (preferably MuleSoft), and vendor platform engineering in a regulated industry
  • Strong leadership and executive presence, with demonstrated success in influencing senior stakeholders and managing complex technology organizations
  • Experience managing multi-million-dollar technology portfolios and vendor contracts
  • Experience in the banking or financial services industry preferred
  • Educated to degree level with experience of working in a mid or large-sized private-sector IT organization
  • Experience in consumer-facing mobile app design, development, and support using principles such as design thinking
  • Experience in identification and successful deployment of new IT technologies and development processes in a small to medium IT organization
  • Experience in staff management, ideally running a department of ~50 or more individuals with an annual budget of more than $3 million

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • TOGAF, AWS/Azure Architect, CISSP, PMP, or equivalent.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Deep knowledge of enterprise integration, security engineering, data governance, and modern architecture practices.
  • Strong familiarity with regulatory compliance frameworks relevant to banking (e.g., FFIEC, NIST, CCPA, GLBA, SOX).
  • Understanding the potential of technologies (in both business and IT terms) and the issues involved in their adoption, not necessarily being a technical practitioner.
  • Strong in soft skills such as business acumen, communication, and relationship building.
  • Increasingly involved in customer experience and issues such as business architecture, and digital transformation, not necessarily obtained by being a technology expert.
  • Understanding new technologies as well as current ones, focusing on those few which are critical to business and where weak decisions would have major consequences.
  • Strong knowledge of the AWS Cloud services stack in the context of large-scale product deployments.
  • A wide understanding of IT technology and vendors combined with the ability to evangelize new developments to both technical and nontechnical audiences. Strong business acumen.
