As an Operations Manager, you'll help lead our teams in maintaining high standards of operational efficiency while prioritizing the safety of all team members. As a steward of operational excellence an Operations Manager will need to be flexible and adapt to changing operational needs and schedules. With our dedicated teams working on all three coasts across over 33 ports and 70 locations, you'll feel empowered to grow professionally while serving the communities in which we operate.

Essential Duties:



  • Develop and maintain positive customer relations by understanding customer needs, contract terms and conditions, by developing and implementing plans to meet those needs, and by ensuring that labor demonstrates customer service principles.
  • Operate within approved fiscal budget limits.
  • Comply with area accident prevention / safety and workers' compensation programs and procedures, and provides regular training sessions and on-going feedback to labor.
  • Ensure that yard labor is trained and works effectively as a team with each other and with other labor and Ports America staff. Ensure effective and regular communication and high employee morale.
  • Keep Manager informed of current operating issues within the yard.
  • Maintain positive relations with union labor and has full working knowledge of union contracts, ensuring adherence to policy and contract procedures.
  • Develop, communicate and maintain operating and administrative procedures for yard operations, designed to improve operational efficiency and productivity.
  • Ensure that all company policies, procedures and controls are followed and that reports are completed accurately and submitted on time to appropriate staff, customers and other designated personnel.
  • Develop, update and accurately maintain the yard plan to ensure parking accuracy and high levels of productivity, operational efficiency and improved trucker turn time.
  • Inspect equipment assigned to the yard regularly, notifying the M&R Department of needed repairs and replacements. Investigate all damage to determine cause, prevent future occurrences and takes corrective action when required.
  • Check the terminal yard regularly to ensure it is free of debris, that fencing is in good order, and that the yard is in the best possible condition to receive new cargo.
  • Complete other tasks and projects as assigned.



Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience, Certifications):



  • 4-year college degree in operations management, logistics management, or related discipline. Experience may be substituted for educational requirements at the college level
  • 5+ years of terminal operations experience within the logistics/transportation industry in a managerial capacity, with significant labor relations experience.
  • Requires the ability to obtain and maintain a TWIC Card issued by the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Port Access Card issued by the NJ State Police.
  • A valid Driver's License in good standing is required.


Preferred Qualifications :



  • Extensive knowledge of terminal operations practices and principles.
  • Working knowledge of managerial and leadership principles, with the ability to influence other management team members and lead a department of technically proficient individuals.
  • Must have familiarity with all aspects of the systems support for the terminal, including software applications, equipment, and work flow.
  • Extensive knowledge of safety, health and environmental issues as they affect the workplace, including local regulations, national requirements.
  • Experience with related union contracts and managing labor.
  • Proven negotiation skills.
  • Experience with computerized operating systems.
  • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations, and related industry governmental regulations.
  • Advanced level verbal and written communications skills in English, effective interpersonal skills with the ability to make effective presentations.
  • Excellent analytical skills, including the ability to extract and analyze data.
  • Ability to handle company information with confidentiality and discretion.

  • The ability to use a computer/keyboard
  • The ability to work in changing hot and cold climates based on weather conditions
  • The ability to work in an environment with moving objects and machinery
  • The environment may be hazardous to persons unable to see or hear fast moving heavy equipment
