Job Summary

IPAC, part of the Physics, Math, and Astronomy Division at Caltech (www.caltech.edu), provides science operations, user support, data and archive services, and scientific vision to maximize discovery with observatories both in space and on the ground. We house and maintain some of the largest astrophysical data archives in the world containing data from ground, air, and space telescopes.

The ISG Systems Engineering team builds and maintains all the IT infrastructure including data centers and networks at IPAC. Wehave an opening for an occasional Information Systems Generalist during the summer months to assist with many tasks our team doesdaily. This person will free up team members to work on more technical tasks while also providing this person an opportunity to learn the skills we use regularly. These tasks include:

  • Installation of new equipment (racking servers, switches, disk arrays).
  • Learning to write various utility scripts using a variety of scripting languages.
  • Testing and re-configuring hardware.
  • Software development on engineering applications.
  • Developing Linux skills
  • IT technology research.
Basic Qualifications:

If you have the following in your background, then we want to hear about your interest in joining our team:

  • Experience with scripting and programming languages.
  • Linux skills.
Preferred Qualifications:

Beyond these basic qualifications, there are a set of skills and experiences which will add to your ability to contribute to the roles and responsibilities of an Information Systems Generalist. The following might give you a head-start here, but even if these do not describe you or your experience, we would still like to hear from you:

  • Python, Perl and C programming.
  • Database experience.
  • Web design.
  • Ability to work both with a team and individually.
  • Good communication skills.

Hiring Range

$18.50 - $19.00 Per Hour

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
